Take a long screw driver and put the blade end agianst the engine and the end of the handle onto your ear. This way, you can listen to where the knock is coming from. Check the head, then find a way to check the block. Believe it or not, if it's a rod bearing, you can actually narrow it down to 1, 2, 3, or 4th cyl. with this trick. That way, you know what you need to order. If it is a rod bearing, all you have to do is drain the oil, take everything off you need to take off to be able to take the oil pan off, take the oil pan off, put a socket and extension on each rod cap and give them a push frontwards (toward the front of the car) and backwards. If they move, you defiantly know that is a bad bearing. If none of them move, then start taking the caps off one by one, (make sure you DO NOT mix them up). The way you know if you have a bad bearing is if it is charred (which would be a spun bearing, and if it is spun, consider your self lucky that it didn't weld to the crank), or if you can see a lot of copper on the half of the bearing you have in your hand (after taking it out of the rod cap). When you reassemble, coat the inside (the part that will touch the crank) with assembly lube and find out what the right tourqe specifications are (you will have to use an inch-pound tourqe wrench).
Have a good one and good luck. -Spunky393 -------------------- The most important lesson I learned from Karate-Dō Kyōshan – “You can not be what you do not believe you are” |
