does anyone know if this may cause crappy back pressure or wipe out the piston rings?

do you meen catalytic converter?

if so don't hollow it out unless you have to because if you do you will cause turbulence inside of it, it is better to replace with straight pipe.

and On my car I could still pass texas inspection becauce when I was N/A I still had the cat/pre-cat thing on the manifold that would still get me by the visual inspection(although I remove manifold and remove elemt inside of that too)
