any one compete in any sports? professional or amature? Options

I figure that this year since Im not coaching, Im gonna work really hard on my freestyle skiing progression and ive found there is a compition circuit in Michgian for skiing, snowboarding and also for boarder and skiier cross. Any ways, they have both professional and amature compitions and im thinking of entering the amature one in february. I wanna know if any one has competed in any sports like this or in any sports that arent team related. I dont know what to expect out of this, but i was wondering if any one can gimme some pointers. like what should u focus on, preping, etc. I havent competed in any sports since i was like.....10? or so.
