When im driving, i hear a loud humming sound coming from the engine bay. I could feel the vibration inside the car as the humming gets louder. It gets louder the faster i drive, so... My guess at first was the wheel bearing, but i lifted the car and wiggled the whee back and forth at 12 and 6 o clock, and there was no play. Sooo my next guess is the Carrier Bearing on the passenger side inner-axel? if a bearing is worn, would it make that humming noise? If it is, is it hard to replace? A little help would be nice, cause the sound is driving me nuts. Thanks guys!

A engine mount vibration isn't going to be tied to vehicle speed. It will be tied to engine speed....
And it's not going to make a humming noise. A bearing can be bad and have no play. Check the shaft and see if it has any play in it [wiggle the trans end]. Is it from the outside of the car or under the hood? -------------------- |

Is it from the outside of the car or under the hood? Thanks for the help guys... ill see if i could get the car off the ground tommorow. I think the sound is coming from under the hood... I will have my radio on loud and still be able to hear it. I could feel the vibration on the steering wheel at certain speeds, like bet. 20 and 30, Im guessing at higher speeds i will be harder to feel, but i can still hear it. If it is the carrier bearing, do any of you know if it would be hard/expensive to replace? I asked toyota and they said the bearing is $25 so its not that bad, im more concerned about the labor. I would take my own axel off, i would just need to take it to a machine shop. Never had a bearing replaced so i dont know. Thanks again guys i really appricate it! |
