So for about 2 years I've had this popping noise. It happens no matter which direction the wheels are turned, but happens less often when turning left. It's inconsistent, and doesn't happen all the time (not a CV joint). At low speeds, it's a pop that's both heard and felt; at high speeds when turning right, it's a whirring noise. It's not a wheel bearing, or else it would be doing it all the time, and the noise hasn't gotten any louder over time nor is there any play in my wheels. There's also a whirring noise when the clutch is disengaged no matter what speed I'm going. The clutch was just replaced about 6 months ago and I haven't been abusing it. The noise started as a violent pop on heavy acceleration or deceleration. I suspected engine mounts, but further visual inspection and also brake torqueing showed no signs of a bad mount. This went away after awhile and no longer happens. I've had no consistent diagnosis from mechanics and the only oddball diagnosis was differential. The Hayne's manual does say that "Noise most pronounced when turning" is a worn differential pinion. Doesn't make any sense to me. Tranny fluid is clean with no metal shavings.
So other than the fact that the 7A is throwing out about a quart of oil a day, this is my only problem. Help. |
