What does radar detectors really do? I want to know..do they really tell you when cops are around?? Cuase i'm tired of cops stopping me!! LoL ok give me input guys!

My $50 dollar Whistler has saved me far from 400 dollars in speeding tickets, I think options such as know which direction the radar is coming from is a little absurd.
