People with cruise control have remarked how having cruise control enabled significantly improves mpg compared with their best efforts manually. It turns out that computers can detect a speed change and compensate way before the combination of the human brain and speedo can.

With that in mind, perhaps some clever people could create an ECU that sits between fly-by-wire brakes and throttle, and listens to speedo and rpm data; and smooths out small changes in speed without adversely affecting response when a driver needs to react quickly to a dangerous situation? It might additionally want to make use of gps and radar to detect relative speeds of cars in front.
