What material was your sub box made out of?
A good subwoofer box should not vibrate at all or vibrate very little. 18mm MDF would be the recommended minimum to use for a subwoofer box. 25mm would be even better but that is bloody heavy. Your subbox should not vibrate and cause unwanted echoes etc etc. Its purpose is simple: 1. Air tight(if sealed box) and not colour the sound in anyway. 2. Correct volume to give the correct amount of damping to the subwoofer cone. 3. Baffle must be adequate to prevent backwave cancellation. What is backwave cancellation? I am sure you all know physics and know about dropping a stone into a pond and you will see the ripple effects. What happens when they meet? They either sum together or they cancel each other. How does a speaker/subwoofer work? same thing. It vibrates and thus creating sound waves that is similar to the effect you see in the water. Most people forget that, if you turn a speaker around.... you will still hear sound. soundwaves emit from the speaker from the front of the cone and from the back as well. Now, if you did not slow down the back wave enough... it is going to interfere with the front wave in the listening space. *This is one of the reasons people use dynamat on their inner door trim. It is to slow down the backwave enough that it would not interfere with the front wave of the speaker. The reason why your subwoofer sounds louder when it in the trunk? see here: http://www.teamrocs.com/technical/pages/aiming.htm This post has been edited by soven: Jul 23, 2007 - 12:35 AM |
