So I was driving to the gym this afternoon when something strange happened. The check engine light flickered on a couple times and the engine cut off. I had my foot on the clutch at the time, so I just released the clutch and it started back up again. After the gym it started and drove fine. Now, on my way home tonight it did it again. It cut again, and I pulled over and tried to start it.... nothing. It cranks over, but wouldn't start. After a couple tries it finally started up and I got about a block down when it did it again. This time it was still running, but when I would give it some gas it felt as though I was doing 25MPH in 5th gear.

Then it shut off. For good.

My first thought was the fuel pump, but when had a friend crank it over I could smell the gas. So I move onto spark. I pulled a plug wire and had my friend crank it again.... no spark. I checked my plug connections and everything was on correct. I didn't have the right tools to check the distributor, and it was pouring rain (Why do you always break down when its pitch black, cold, on a back road, and pouring rain?)

So she was towed to my mechanic and he'll have a look-see tomorrow, but I would like to hear the thoughts of those who may have ideas as to what is causing this.

Ugh... I'm going to bed.

Update: kinda...

I went to the shop today and they had ruled out the distributor. They are getting a pulse from it at the correct wavelength so that rules that out. Next is the Coil and Ignitor.

I ran to the local toyota junkyard and picked up a coil and ignitor and ran it back to the shop. I plugged the ignitor in and had them crank it... still no spark.

BUT!

I called Coomer and left him a message and he called me back. We chatted about the symptoms and he also thinks the ignitor might be the culprit. Because of the way its mounted on top of the coil it might have had too much road vibration and something might have broken off - so I am printing off Coomer's wiring diagrams and I'm going to drop those off at the shop tonight and fingers crossed that it works.
