Eh...this sucks, got the 3SGTE and since it won't pass smog and it seemed we were going to have some complications in putting it in, I decided to give it up and just put the Burrien turbo onto the 5SFE.
I think I would need metal head gasket, FMIC, Forged Pistons, and camshafts for going high hp? Where can I get the cam shafts and forged pistons. Is webcams cam shaft good for the turbo kit I want? Thanks |

Technically, it's not illegal to swap engines. However, what makes it illegal is if you swap in an engine that isn't smog legal. The primary reason why a JDM motor isn't smog legal is because it doesn't contain certain (legally required) equipment (i.e. the EGR system). However, you can still install the motor, and you will still pass the sniffer test. But before you can take the sniffer test, you will need to pass the visual (if you don't have the hook ups)... So here's my advice to you... just follow the 'ol adage, "what they don't know won't hurt them." Just make sure you have a shop (once your pop sells his) that can smog your car and will pass it... *cough* hook ups *cough*... As for reliability, this motor is just as reliable as any other car on the streets. It just boils down to how well you maintain the motor. Now as long as you don't have a 3rd gen 3S-GTE motor, then you should be alright with maintenance and parts. If you DO have a 3rd gen, be prepared to wait long hours, days, weeks, and months for parts to come in from Japan... *cough* water pump *cough* *cough* timing belt *cough* *cough* etc... As for a How-to... good luck... you may be able to find minimal information on this on the Web... but since everyone's swap will vary, you may or may not find something that'll suit your needs. One person who did a decent job in documenting his progress is Mike (Qatar) and his website can be found on http://www.topshelfracing.com I would recommend that you do some searching, since this topic has been discussed MANY MANY times here, on Celica.net, on ToyotaCelicaWeb.com, ToyotaCelicaOnline.com, Alltrac.net, etc... Now if you come back to me saying that you searched and couldn't find anything... I suggest you give up on this project... why? Because like I said, it's been discussed many times and there are people who have provided lots of useful info and how-to's for certain aspects of this swap... all you have to do is take some time and start diggin...
