So lately I've been insanely busy...I know I'm always busy, but lately it's just been crazy. In the last three weeks, 20 out of 21 days have been 16+ hour work days. For the first couple weeks of this stretch, this was all time at work actually working on a new fast-paced new project. For the second week, it's been a good mix of being at work actually working on work stuff, and working on a new personal web application project.
I'm posting up here because I figure a lot of you guys may be very interested in what I'm building. I'm keeping it under wraps for a couple more days, as I'm not quite sure what direction I'm going with it for sure, but I'll let you guys know as soon as it goes live, hopefully Thursday. I will say that it's entirely different than 6GC, and is somewhat related, but in no-way competitive or anything. And that it's cool...I'm already enjoying playing with my beta version of it. (Those of you who know what I'm building, please keep quiet for a couple days ) But mainly, I wanted to talk about some of the technology I'm using for it, and what it means for you guys. First, the bad thing is possible downtime. My web application will be running on the same server as 6GC, at least initially, and if it really gets a lot of usage, it's possible that it may take the server down. Backups of 6GC are being created automatically now, and I have a plan in place should the server go down to offload the database access and image resizing of the new app (what would take down the server most likely) to a new server. Edit: I wrote this paragraph a couple days ago. I refactored my code and it now hits the database about 5% as much as before, so I'm not too worried. Now the good. My application is built to scale, and thus, has unlimited storage capacity, and the storage and bandwidth are dirt cheap. This technology can be directly applied to 6GC, potentially allowing you guys to upload more photos...maybe even photo uploads in the forums. Also, I work for Snapvine, and we're all about voice. I may potentially tie some of our voice stuff into my new application, and may consider doing the same for the forums. Also, while developing my new application, I discovered several bugs on 6GC and have fixed them. Most likely no-one ever saw them, but they're fixed now anyway. And finally, image uploads should soon start working better than before. Sometimes images turn out being completely black, and I've developed a fix on my new app, and will be applying it over to 6GC shortly. There's a lot of other new stuff I've been doing that I may apply on 6GC, but I'm just not sure on all of it yet. One thing is for sure though. I'm very, very excited about my new app, and will announce it to all of you as soon as it's live so you can all play with it. I'm hoping the app becomes viral, so once you guys see it and have it, others will see it and want it, get it, and it will spread and become popular. Stay tuned! I'll update you guys in a couple days! -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...
