Regarding thermostats, 3 points:
1- You need a thermostat - the computer wont allow certain engine management functions to operate (like timing advance, etc) til the sensors tell it the engine is up to temp, too cool a thermostat, or no thermostat, can actually hurt performance unless you have aftermarket engine management. 2- No thermostat can make it awfully cold in your car in the wintertime, the thermostat is there to make sure the engine stays at least at its designated operating temp. It is constantly opening or shutting to keep the temp at least at its rated setting, (In Florida, it may be open most of the time) And in the summer it can circulate too fast and not have time to cool - I have seen this on other cars where they run hotter with no thermostat, depends on the car and the condition of the cooling system. 3- Buy an OE thermostat from Toyota, the aftermarket ones are a good way to learn how to install head gaskets or new engines. My personal experience is they will stick, (usually shut) after a few months or a couple of years, ( I say this after having worked in an auto parts store for 12 years) - I WILL NOT use those cheap aftermarket ones anymore) I always assumed it was normal for them to need replacing every couple of years,,,not so! And all it takes is 1 good overheat to ruin an aluminum head and/or cook the rings. This post has been edited by 97GTinKC: Oct 16, 2003 - 11:31 AM |
