low compression isnt always a worn engine issue. infrequent, missed, or neglected oil changes can gum up the ring grooves in the pistons causing the rings to stick IN the grooves and not seal to the cylinder, allowing oil past and burnt and allowing compression past into the crank case of the engine.

a quick diagnosis is: with the engine running remove the oil fill cap. it should NOT be blowing alot of air out. a little blowing out is ok and it should not smell like exhaust.
