I bet that the ball joint came undone. This happened to me in a previous car once. If it is the ball joint you are lucky cuz it could've gave out when you were driving down the highway. One time after work one day I let one of my buddies drive my 98 cavalier home. (we lived in the next town). It was on this half ice, half snow covered road. He started goofing off and trying to fishtail and the car spun out of control and we went off the road onto this side road and he got control and he kept driving down this road and he took this corner going about 35 or so and all of a sudden it felt like we hit this HUMONGOUS pothole with all the wheels and the car started bouncing really rough and then it stopped. He tried to start going again and it wouldn't. It just revved up real high. He put it in reverse and that didn't work. He got out and looked at the front tire and his jaw dropped. I thought that we got hung up on a tree stump or something and that's why it wouldn't go. I got out and looked at it and the only that was holding the wheel on was the top of the strut and spring. The top was all the way out and the bottom was all the way in. We had to walk back in town and had it towed and the mechanic told me that I was lucky that it happened that way cuz these things normally don't give out even under that much abuse. He said that it was pretty worn-out, especially for being such a new car. Then my friend being the way that he is didn't pay a nickel to get it fixed. He said that I was lucky to have a friend who would look out for him like that and that I should thank him for potentially saving my life.

Matt
