Radar/Laser Detector Options

im don't know where to post this but im thinking about getting one for my car. are they legal in the state of california?

so i was using my friend's laser detector for fun
it starts beeping, i slow down
cop pulls me over, tells me to hand me over the detector or he will put me in jail and impound my car and search every inch of it.
i said, "um...no"
he says, "this isn't the US. Officers in Canada do not need a reason to put people in jail or search through public property"
*shows me Section 53.457A-4 of some law book*
me, "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"
ya, radar detectors are very illegal where i live.
i got a $300 ticket and i'm losing my license for 6 months
