I have to agree that there is no such thing as simply a "BEST" engine. Each engine is different and how you modify it also has pretty significant effects. Usually making High End power hurts low end torque and what not. But simply speaking for your ST a 4A-GE engine swap would probably be the easiest since your car has an A Series Engine. but your going from a 1.8L to a 1.6L which means torque would take a sick beating but the top end is pretty good for those engines. Of course you can find a wrecked GT at a Junk yard and swap the 5S-FE in, its not the fastest engine nor gets the greatest mileage but its got pretty good drive-ability patterns thanks to its 2.2L displacement. Then again you can swap in a JDM or EDM 3S-GE which makes alot more top end than a 5S-FE or 4A-GE. but again its low end power isn't as good as a 5S-FE because its a smaller engine being 2.0L so drive-ablity is again hurt. But then again you always have the option of getting a 3S-GTE which has power all across the rev range but suffers from turbo Lag, at least non rally cars do from what I hear. Or you could do a V6 swap from a camry but these are a little more complicated but drive-ability is second to none. especially if you mod it correctly. And you'd get great top end. Simply put your choice of engine depends on how you'd like to drive. A daily driver wouldn't make top end to be a great race car yet a Track car would suck in traffic. The Choice is yours
