As usual, we get our monthly spurts of questions pertaining to the 3S-GTE swap and what else one will need to complete it. BEFORE any of you new guys continue asking should you get, what else will you need, or what not, let me recommend you all do this:
1. Research. This is by far the best advice anyone will be able to give you here. A lot of information has been posted. If you have questions that HAVE NOT been answered, then ask. 2. Funds. If you don't have the funds, are no where near having the funds, or are one of those people saying "I SHOULD be ready by next summer", there's a good chance that you won't be performing this swap for quite A WHILE. I know that you are all intrigued by the infamous 3S-GTE, but not to waste our time by asking the same questions over and over again. BE PREPARED. I'd recommend having about $4000 saved up in your savings for the JUST IN CASE situations. TRUST ME. There's nothing I hate more than things coming up unexpectedly and the shop telling me... OH NO... this won't work, we're going to need X part from Y car because Z is not compatible. 3. Patience. Be prepared for some serious downtime. If you have a ST, be EXTRA prepared! Once my swap is complete, I'll supply as much info as I can to ensure a smooth installation. I don't want to see anymore people encounter problems like what I've gone through. Just when I thought my swap was just about complete and that I wouldn't need to purchase anything else, I just found out this past weekend that I'm going to need an accelerator cable, power steering high pressure line, power steering pump, and A/C lines all from a GT. And you know what... THIS FREAKIN SUX! I don't mind spending the money for things that are necessary... BUT I would like to be prepared. Since Christmas is coming up, it would be nice to have money to spend on people, rather than on my car. Well, that's it for now. If others would like to add to this... feel free... I you want to bash... go for it... I don't care anymore... There's nothing anybody can say or do that'll phase me... I'm already numb from all the frustration and grief this project has caused me and all the other drama that is happening concurrently in my life. |

Yup... it's definitely been complete hell. I've been CAR-less (not careless) since June 2002. Everytime I asked ELP if I needed to get anything else... they would say no. Then a couple months would pass, and they would tell me that I'm going to need this... that... this... that. Everytime they told me that nothing else was needed, I would adjust my budget so that I could go all out and get some high quality parts (i.e. Blitz SBC-iD and Power-iD). Then when they would tell me that a certain part is needed, I would have to wait for the next couple paychecks because I blew everything on other parts. I'm telling you, this vicious cycle was a beyatch!! I thought I had my budget all planned out, but having the shop turn around and tell me that I need more parts just fudges things up for me. Well, all I know is that these parts should be the last. If they tell me that I need something else... I'm going to make sure that they cover the costs. I'm just sick and tired of their BS! You'd think that after doing SO MANY GOD DAMN swaps, they would have most of this documented by now. I think I may have been the first (or second) and possibly the last 6th gen they've worked on, but still... their experience with SW's and 5th gen's should have them more prepared... so you would think. Anyway... I've been taking lots of pictures, saving every single freakin receipt, and documenting this whole process as much as I could. I plan on putting together a site with all the information... so that anyone that is interested in doing this swap will be much more prepared. I may also put together some documentation that I'll send to Coomer to post here. What I would like to do is put together something that others can modify/update since not all swaps are the same. Some do swaps from a ST185, and others do a ST205. Mine is a ST205 WRC... which is a LITTLE different from all you guys... but for the most part, everything else is closely similar. The only thing that I won't (due to lack of information) is wiring. I'm sure Mike has this information, BUT don't expect him to post this info. He runs a business based on this sacred info, and if I knew what he knew, I wouldn't document wiring either. But everything else, I'll be glad to share. Anyway... thanks everyone for the support. I'll continue to keep yallz posted. -Ray |
