So I was driving back from the Gym, and in typical fashion, because I'd decided to take my MX5 (rather than the Celica) it had started raining quite heavily on the way home (no roof down for me).

I live in a Valley, one way in and out, over a twisting road made of four lanes (2 each way) and a solid barrier in the middle. The thing about this hill is that a lot of people absolutely smoke it, up and down. I'm no slouch, but nothing like the insanity runs I get to see on a regular basis. Anyway, it has some tricky corners and reverse cambers, which means if you drive beyond your ability it could all end very badly, and often does.

Well I had "someone" following behind me as I approached the start of the hill, and I think they were driving a pre 2000 BMW that looked like it had a few mods to it. I'm thinking it was past it's prime and being driven by some young kid.

The speed limit is 50k in a single lane until you hit the hill, then it's a "liberal" 80k as it opens into 2 lanes. Many people wind it up before you hit the start to get a good "run up" and then slot into the fast lane, or simply ignore the cross-hatch road markings and studs in the road and hit the fast lane before there actually even is one.

But that doesn't work when you have someone driving very slowly in front of you as you make the approach, which was what was happening to me (nothing I could do about it) but clearly the guy behind me was very eager to get going.

So "before" the fast lane had properly opened up, he somewhat illegally planted boot to try and squeese past me. Well that was his plan.

I was watching this in my rear-view because I've seen it many times before, but this guys back wheels started sliding out. Not too bad, and he seemed to get it back, and then they started sliding again in the other direction. I actually thought he might be show-boating, but then he did a final skid that left him almost face first into the barriers, but I think he only very lightly touched them before coming to a complete stop.

It was quite a show!! Luckily there was no one directly behind him. I kept going because there was simply no where safe to park and stopping would only have made a dangerous sitation worse, IMHO. I'm pretty sure he would have got out of it OK apart from needing to change his underwear when he got home.

OK, so even if you didn't get any entertainment out of this narrative (nothing beats the real thing) it is still a timely reminder for everyone: DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS!!!
