I am desperately searching thru my Dad's auto mags of this month to find the article he was describing. It supposively said that Nissan is going to counter Toyota's release of a supercar in 2005 with it's bringing of the Skyline to the US in 2007. Is this true?

basically this is whats going on from a R&D standpoint:

sport compacts and sports cars are really big right now. Toyota has basically concided on that era and focusing on the next big thing, hybrid and fuelcell high gas-milage vehicles, which is unfortunatly the inevitable direction the auto market is going to take.

its like comparing this: before this sports car era, we had the SUV boom, before that was the stationwagon boom, and following the SUV boom was the short-lived crossover vehicle boom. these were very small eras in the evolution of vehicles.

Toyota is focusing on hybrid and fuelcell vehicles because that transformation can be more closely compared to the carborated to fuel injection transformation rather then the switching between popular vehicles of the time. instead of focusing on a certain market that is in a temporary high, they noticed that global economy isnt looking highly on oil dependant fuel. so they are looking to be one of the front runners for the mainstream advancement of automotives into fuel cells. the only thing that would crush this is if bush were to be a complete hypocrit and go ahead and claim iraqi oil fields as US property. but theres no way gv't would let that happen, the hupla following that kind of thing would be absolute pandamonium. That can be compared to how the Rotary motor, which was supposed to revolutionize engine technology, hit a brick wall when the energy crisis happened. This would be the exact opposite of that, instead of being in a crisis we would be back to normal, gas prices would fall, and the need for fuelcell vehicles would drop, and the high efficiency projects would dissappear.
