1 million miles oil test

I'm surprised at how little wear was on the engine after one million miles.

3k was not a scam, it's a carry over from when oils and additives were not nearly as good as they are now. better living through modern science.

Bitter, the oil change interval has increase not only from the oil construction; but from the new engine design also.

I know first hand that the volkswagen 1.8t engine has a engine oil sludge problem. Would I still stick with the oil change interval of 10k miles? most likely not. I would stay with the safe approach and use the 5k miles oil change interval with a nice synthetic oil.

New engines no longer have carburetors that slowly work gasoline into the engine oil (those of you who are old enough would remember flooded engines or vapor lock) . Also new cars have a better positive crank case ventilation system that keeps most of the blow-by (aka gasoline fumes and carbon) from entering the oil. Lastly the new engine design also has better tolerances that wear less and pollute the oil with debris .

So the main reason why most new cars have an extended oil change interval of 5k-15k miles depends solely on the engine design. I would not recommend using a 10k oil change interval on an older car even with new oil technology.
