if you remove the stock shifter and cut the bottom rod and weld in a spacer to the rod and compensate for the extension on the plastic seat the shifter sits in will it function just like a short shifter?

You could, but honestly just buy a 7th gen short shifter from ebay and install that. If you hack the stock one then there will be no way to go back unless you buy another shifter.
Ebay short shifter + brass shifter base bushings + brass shift cable bushings = great shift feel. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

Ebay short shifter + brass shifter base bushings + brass shift cable bushings = great shift feel. with all due respect, i give myself more credit at cutting/welding than worrying about messing up SO BAD that i cant even fix the original. plus, i literally have NO money to buy even the cheapest ebay one. cuz right now putting that thirty dollars in the tank is more important since i physically cannot fabricate a tank of gas. i can, however, fabricate exactly what they have for sale. -------------------- I went full retard once, too. Its OK.
