It didn't respect the heritage of the MR2. There was no performance model, only the one option. It was convertible only - not a hardtop, sunroof, and t-top. There is no trunk, just the frunk. It's power/weight ratio is lower than the previous two generations, the interior is cheap and doesn't have the same cockpit feel that the AW11 and SW20 have...
I can go on for days about why the 3rd gen is an abomination - frankly it doesn't surprise me that Toyota did what they did, because it was a vehicle that lived and died during that transition Toyota made into only making Beige-mobiles. And it isn't at all like saying I would take a mid 90's 911 over a new 911. Not even comparable.
