Alright folks...I got a wild hair, and need to address it.
I want to plastidip the whole red GT. There are a few reasons for such. 1. The current paint is horrible and ugly as sin with clear chipping off everywhere. 2. I will be swapping over black doors..and obviouslly I'd like the colors to match atleast some! 3. After seeing a couple done online, it doesn't look half bad, and would look better than what I have now. 4. Easy removal for when the swap is done, and the whole car will be professionally painted then. 5. I have a bunch of exterior bits I want to put on, but cannot because of the current red paint situation, this will have them all one color until it comes time to paint correctly. According to calculations I should be needing about 25 cans. The paint is "flat" black..I'd call it more of a semi-gloss. There should be approx 5-6 coats depending on which panel is being painted. Will be done in stages to avoid uneven layers. Lets hear thoughts on why and why nots please. Did I mention I hate red, and love black cars? I did this recently to my 4th gen.
I used a Wagner spray gun combined with a gallon of plastidip+thinner. Came out nicer than I thought it would. Here is what she looked like before. |

I used a Wagner spray gun combined with a gallon of plastidip+thinner. Yea I will be doing the same after doing the hood with the rattle cans, I'm not happy with the extra work and the way the spray laid. Figured if it went south I'd do as you mentioned above, and just get the whole car done in one shot, right. Could you share your mix ratio of thinner to paint please? I believe it was 1 quart thinner to 1 gallon but it was provided in the kit from dipyourcar.com When you buy a gallon they already provide the thinner. The prices are cheaper than locally but since they are in Florida the shipping really kills it for me. The main reason I bought from them initially was for the sprayer since it was unavailable anywhere else. |
