My celica is making a horrible knocking noise, I brought it in to get it checked and at first they said my engine was toast. I mean it does have 228k but i mean i was kind of surprised when they told me that because it drove fine before the knocking started. While I was down in the dumps since they told me that i would run me a total of 2k to get and new engine and have it installed, while the mechanic was backing the car out he noticed that whenever he would turn the wheel of the car the knocking noise would stop, he told me to bring it back so he can have take a extensive look at it. I'm just wondering if anyone has had the same problem & if so did changing the power steering pump help or did you just spend extra money for nothing?

I've brought my other cars to him before and he gets the job done but the problem is that his labor rates are ridiculous. I have the 2.2 5sfe motor, the noise doesn't go away when i rev it, the higher i rev the engine the faster the knocking sound. I tried turning the steering wheel and reving it and when i do that there is no knocking noise. Also the power steering pump is leaking fluid.

is this someone or a shop you can trust? alot of places will tell you either a complete lie or an exaggerated truth to get your money. if you have the means necessary id replace the motor yourself if it is in fact "toast". could just need a rebuild.

what motor do you have?
does the noise go away when the rpms increase(giving it gas)?
when you turn the wheel far enough the computer tells the engine to give some revs to allow more pressure to the rack to steer the car.
