caliper question, need help Options

there are two bolts on the back of the caliper that i removed (dont ask y, long story, long day). neways there on the top of the caliper and when i went to put them back in u could slide in part of the way and after that it just stopped. they were sticking out, and you could not screw them back in. they seem to be holding nothing and i dont kno exactly what these bolts are used for. is something broken? i drove my car back home very carefully because it was only a block away and the brakes seemed to work fine and the bolts were still there when i got home. the weird thing is you can easily pull them out. nebody know wut im talking about? im a lil worried and dont want to be driving my car around unsafely. thanx
