Bought my '97 Vert last October, and the rpm's were erratic with the AC on, and a growl roared from under the hood when passing cars....or just punching it. I changed the air filter, but didn't notice any cracks in the hose. I had the oil changed last week, and they must have given the hose a good tug. I opened the hood just to give things a routine look while the engine was running this morning, and heard a sucking sound. The air intake hose had a tear 3/4 of the way around, with about an 1/8" gap. I ran some duct tape around it (had to remove the hose and resonator under it), and ordered a new hose. Now it idles like a Swiss clock, and there's no more growling at WOT. This was a crack that I hadn't noticed before, and I did look at that area before, so it must not take much to degrade performance! Zero to sixty was much smoother this afternoon, and absolutely quiet. The new hose is supposed to be here in 3 days, and was $13 from the local Toyota dealer.
Just thought this might help someone...... |
