Well, if you're ready to swap soon go ahead and keep driving it until it pops.

Well I wouldn't say I'm "ready" for a swap, but I have found a company that I can buy an engine block that's already rebuilt or I was thinking I could find another used 7a-fe to rebuild or swap in... not really sure which way is most cost effective. I've only had the car for 4 months, but have no idea how long it was knocking before I got it. It runs great, so I'm sorta in the "if it isn't broke don't fix it" mode as of now. Plus if I can put off dropping 1500-2000 dollars into it right now that would be nice...

If youre gonna rebuild or replace the engine then dont worry about driving it till it dies. All you are doing is wearing the already worn pieces more. Instead of taking off .005 now they have to take off .010, no big deal.

I would just keep going until it dies. For what it costs to rebuild or replace with another 7A-FE you're not too terribly far from just engine swapping.

^^^ since you have a ST you should upgrade to a V6, not a crappy 3S-GTE that is too expensive.

now back on topic. Erynns car did the exact same thing. when i pulled it apart, this is what i found.

all the bearings looked like this. luckily the crankshaft was fine. it just needed a polish and it cleaned up perfectly.

what v6 are you talking about???

So are you saying it won't ruin the engine for a rebuild if I wait till it snaps? I figured it would be toast if I did, but I've never had this problem before.

My car does the same exact thing o_O Everyone keeps telling me it's rod knock and I'm like it's been doing it now for almost 2 years. It gets better when I put new oil in it and gets worse when I get close to having to do another oil change. I took the valve cover off mine and didn't see anything in there...good luck. I figured best move for me was to nurse her along until I get my 3sgte ^_^

Dammmnn im doing the same thing because my celica is going threw the smae thing so i said f@&$ it... Just stack up and den do that swap!!!!!

good thing i searched before posting.

i was gonna ask around and see if anyone can help me with this issue and found this thread =]

i have the same noise, except mine isnt that loud at start up,.. its most loudest and highest rattle point is while cruising around 2800 - 3300 rpms, but when i raise my rpms it goes away until i release the gas.
the sound is exactly like the video. i also have an at200 with 185k miles.. are these motors notorious for this ?
also jus recently had to fix the most annoying oil leak ever,.. about a week ago i replaced, Water Pump, Timing Belt, Crankshaft Seal, Timing Belt Tensioner Roller, Valve Cover Gasket, Camshaft Seal during the fix of my leak,.. i thought one of these would make that annoying rattle sound go away but it didnt =[

Ooohhhh man, I hate to break it to you but that noise turned out to definitely be rod-knock. I got about 5 months of driving her nicely before it threw the rod and put a hole in the block. I have another rebuilt engine now thanks to Smaay, but you will want to take care of it sooner than later!

^^^ if its tapping now, it might be salvageable, dont run it till it siezes up like celicakitten did. pull the engine now, tear it down and inspect it. im willing to bet the bearings look just like the ones i posted.

thats horrible guys, i was hoping it wasnt as bad as it sounded,...
this is my daily driver car and my job is an hour away from home
and adds 30miles jus going one way, so i put about 300miles a week..
so with that math, im guessing my car is about to give any day..?/ =(
im far from the mechanic type and the time it would take me would really cost me.
besides that annoying sound, my car is running great at 185k, no check engine...

questions that are running thru my head,,
do i take it to a mechanic? do i sell it ? or do i swap..?
which ever it is, i will have to borrow my dads car while this is happening,.. =[

sad that im all the way on the other side from u guys,..
