hey just bought my first celica and am looking for some help to get it running how i would like. the front cv joint clicks while turning so i have got myself a replacement drive shaft and am going to change it out over the weekend. the only issue is that its passenger side and all the how2s i can find seem to deal with drivers side onle. its a 1997 2.0 gt uk model with abs. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just make sure the ABS ring is present.

Passenger side is cake. Just remove the axle bolt from the hub. Move it out of the way, then remove the 2 bolts that are in the middle of the shaft attaching to the bracket.

cheers. abs ring is there and ready to go in. its just that ive seen a couple of how2s and they say to strip everything down completely.

im guessing that means there is a difference in how they come out of the transmission, depending on what side of the car its on?

The short shaft has a c-clip on the end, and requires prying out, or using a slide hammer with a fork on it. The longer shaft is simply held in place with a bracket in the middle, and just slides in and out the trannie without a clip. Either way, both sides you are going to disconnect them from the wheel assembly via the axle nut. I remove the strut bolts so I have more room to move the hub around. Once you remove the bottom end from the wheel assemblies you just go at depending on which you are working on. The one with the clip can occasionally be a pain, if it takes you more then 30 minutes prying to get it out, I would go find a slide hammer. I wasted idk how much time fking with it until I drove myself to Advanced Auto and rented a slide hammer with a hook attachment. First slide of the hammer and it popped out. I was a little upset at myself for wasting so much time.. Feel ya. I've pulled that axle 5 times now, the first 2 times easy...next 3. I was screaming so loud the area thought I was crazy. Rent the slide hammer, 15 seconds its out. Truly though, I've noticed if the axle doesn't have any play when into the trannie, it comes out easy with a few taps and a pry bar. Possibly a bearing going bad, or just old age..no idea, but it appears on the abused transmission it takes alot of work to get that beast out. |

Just get underneath and using something flat lean it against the cv axle going into the transmission and tap on it outwards then rotate axle, tap again, rotate, tap again until it comes out and then pull it off. Super easy and doesn't even require a slide hammer.

done it cheers guys. was the short side axle. left the entire hub assembly together it just moved out of the way. gave the shaft a good old tug and the inside joint collapsed. blessing in disguise realy as i had loads of room to stick a prybar in each side and it popped out no worries.
