Hi folks, i have a couple of quick questions regarding upholstering.

I'm planning on re-upholstering my headliner with synthetic leather (which is the easy bit) and was wondering has any one else re-upholstered their sun visors? and how would i go abouts doing this? I was thinking maybe I should Contact Cement the material to the sun visors? i don't want the headliner to be black and sun visors to be grey lol

any help regarding the matter would be greatly appreciated biggrin.gif

Ray

p.s apologies if people have milked this question already! Can't seem to find anything on it though

I've done this for a few people now and it can be a bit of a chore to do. The hardest parts (in my opinion) are working round the mirrors in them and also getting a nice join along the top edge where the visor clips into it's mounts.

If you make the cover so it's a snug fit, you should only need glue along the top and round the mirrors (if you sew the sides, of course). I'd strongly recommend a high-temp adhesive as it'll all fall apart otherwise!

Thank you very much for your reply. I was hoping I didn't have to do any stitching but I think that's probably best to do. If I cock it up il have it professionally done lol what adhesive would you recommend?

you would have to stitch a cover. I tried gluing fabric and it didn't work...ended up making a tight slipcover for it, and just nixed the mirror

I want mine done in black as well. I snagged some camry ones from a junkyard and tried my hand at them but didn't like the results at all. Seems like someone could make a quick buck offering these as a service to this community. wink.gif

They're a bit fiddly to make and the mirror(s) are annoying as they don't remove from the visor like Gen 7 ones do. But, with a supply of visors from breakers yards, it'd be easy enough to offer as a service. smile.gif

Yeah but they don't come in black IIRC. If they do please LMK

I've got several sets including one set of the vert ones and I'm willing to donate to make this happen. Unfortunately my DIY skills do not include sunvisors and grey on an otherwise all black interior looks like...

im going to have to make slip covers like schmooot said. tried gluing on some old ones but they came out looking tacky. also called dealers and they dont have black ones unfortunately. in 2 minds about what colour i should do them now tho. black headliner and visors or red headliner and visors. my upholstery is going to be red as soon as vincent_doggy completed them.

DEATH i love your car man. how much does the gt4 hood actually stick out at the front and does it look out of place? (its hard to tell because of shadowing)

I used black suede....mixed with sawdust from my dirty bench wink.gif

I tore all the old stuff off and sewed a tight slipcover to slide on from the fat side to the side with the mount

cut the fabric and pin it inside out using the visor as a template.
I used one piece and folded it over the bottom of the visor so the only seam is at the top.
Then sew with a machine.

Note: The visor is tapered...it is thicker on the one side so you have to sew the cover strong...it will be a bitch to slide the skinny end over the thick end...just make sure your stitches are tight

This left the side where it mounts to the roof wide open (like a pillowcase if you get the concept of a slipcover).

I am still considered whether to cut out the fabric from around the holding clip...just haven't got around to it yet

Next was the hard part....I actually got my mom to hand stitch the end shut for me (the truth comes out)

I think she did a pretty damn good job

Have you tried with the mirrors? I've had some ideas how to stitch them in, but none of them went the way I wanted... biggrin.gif

Also have you replaced the foam inside? I used foam that was too thick, like 1cm... 0.5 cm thick foam should be perfect for it

Vincent_doggy said he can get them wrapped for me for a pretty decent price. I''ll probably get a set off him later. And schmoot thanks for the pics. I might give it a go with the mirrors
