Question, Governer Options

Do our cars have governer? Or anything in the ECU that tells the car to not preform as well as it should/could?

JDM ECU's have a speed limiter of 180 km/h.

I belive the ST is governed at 110 mph. Though I'm not sure about the other models

Edit: Sorry Box it didn't actually cross my mind at the time that 180k and 110mph are about the same

Only the JDM cars are governed, and yes 180 km/h equals 112 mph. Given a long enough race in a straight line ours car would be "faster" against the JDM models.

I've had an ST auto and GT manual at their top speeds. Neither hit a governor. They both just ran out of power to go any faster.

St has a governor from fsctory cause the tires it come with cant handle high speed. I prob cud of got the st too 120 mph

That's all I can get my gt to.. At only 5000 in 4th gear, drops down to about 4k if I put it in 5th but won't go any faster, that's why I was curious.

Manual GT maxes out at 120mph and that's because of the S54. My Celica has been up to almost 140 when the previous owner had it (on the auto trans).

It's only limited by gearing and engine power in the USA. Above a certain speed you lack the gearing and power to go any faster.

Its not that the 5s doesn't have enough power, its the fact that (like any other car) it has a rev limit, hit that and its game. The 3s will hit 135ish on the S54 before it redlines. If the gearing was longer, it could go a lot faster (like the auto that maxes out past 140mph).

Its not that the 5s doesn't have enough power, its the fact that (like any other car) it has a rev limit, hit that and its game. The 3s will hit 135ish on the S54 before it redlines. If the gearing was longer, it could go a lot faster (like the auto that maxes out past 140mph).

Longer gearing means you need more power though since you're past a 1:1 ratio and the power the engine makes is being reduced to the wheels to make them spin faster. There's no free lunch, you can't spin something faster AND make more power, it's one or the other. Lower gears multiply the engine power, highest gear reduces it. In a 1:1 gear what you have at the crank is what you get at the wheels (except drive train loss).

eh my manual 94 gt with advanced timing and ported and polished heads can max the speedo, I run out of power a little above 145 it seems. The best part about this car is it handles incredibly at even 100mph, I love it. I also gutted my power steering and don't use the A/C so it frees up that little bit of power loss from them which is more significant than people think in engines only putting out so much power like these.

The factory speedo is not calibrated to read accurately over about 85 mph, and if you're running anything other than stock sized tires and wheels the accuracy is further thrown out the window. You're more likely doing 115-118 actual speed, not the 145 indicated. Verify with a GPS.

My gps is always on, 145 is accurate. I had coolant steaming out of my engine when I did it, I never pushed it that far again after. Being my other car is about 400hp 145 is kind of normal being we live on back country roads with nothing around I don't go easy on any of my cars. My wife isn't even phased by it anymore it's funny.
