Thanks. I'm not too mechanically inclined, and I don't have the workspace. How much do you think a shop should charge for the fix with labour?
Saw a leak - easy to fix? Easy enough. Pull the axle on whatever side. Use a seal puller, and put in the new one. I think it took me maybe an hour to do it. Depends on if you plan to re-use your trans fluid, as you will have to drain to do it. |

What's the part number for the outer seal? I just noticed mines leaking too so I'm planning on replacing it when I do my soon to do hub conversion. I found a NOK one but not sure if it's the right one. I found this part number but not sure if it's the right one either: 90311-34016

I just did the Cv axle so I know they told me there are three different transmissions and all three different seals
mine was a Timken 223540 (ive got an st204 5s-fe with a 5speed) http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.p...&cc=1274307 its probably either flat like that one or it has a little cup on the end like this one http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.p...&cc=1274307 I guess this is a good time to ask " where are the ID numbers on the transmission?" I can see some stuff stamped on the top where it mounts to the motor is that it? I just popped it out and took it up there to match it. btw they did have the original Timken seal even a O'riely about $8 But this being an "easy" job depends on how easy it is to get that CV axle out, in fact I was under the impression that you Have to take the ball-joint apart, and that once you separate it the boot is ruined even if the ball joint was good before, and you have to replace it. -------------------- Bust a Deal; Face the Wheel.

the 2nd picture is what the seal looks like. Personally i will never use an aftermarket seal. Spend the money, get an OEM seal

the 2nd picture is what the seal looks like. Personally i will never use an aftermarket seal. Spend the money, get an OEM seal I tried to be careful when installing mine, and inserting the CV. Still, my aftermarket seals both leak, slowly but surely. Does anyone have any idea what the amount of typical fluid loss is? I hope it's not too drastic to necessitate a fill-up, since that means putting the car on four jack stands which is a pain. I never see transmission fluid drips or puddles, but when I had an alignment done the mech showed me two damp trails of grimy fluid. -------------------- '97 ST \ Eibach \ KYB \ Kenwood \ Alpine \ Cusco \ OEM+ [sold 10/18]

^If it helps. When I refilled my tranny after I found the leak. I squeezed about 1qt into it before it started to overflow. So my guess would be its holding around 2qts if not less.

That does help, thank you.
The only way to refill is to level the car, no? I'd just like to know before I invest in some hardware. I don't have access to a lift. -------------------- '97 ST \ Eibach \ KYB \ Kenwood \ Alpine \ Cusco \ OEM+ [sold 10/18]
