usually if the gas gauge stops working its because the fuel sending float/sensor on the fuel pump is bad. not sure if that's the only reason it may be, but the fuel pump is under the back seat cushion which is Way easier to get to than most cars.
...well no, if you have a GT4 I think you have to drop the tank to do the fuel pump : / -------------------- Bust a Deal; Face the Wheel.

First check that sensor inside the tank. But forgot to follow advice above . For Gt-four is accessible from boot. On the left you will find long plastic cover for wires and this is the place to begin. The biggest issue is possibly rusted bolts. I had the same issues with gauge 5 years ago and made some pictures. I'll find them and post later .
EDIT: here it is. Please ignore that red rectangle. It refers to the rust in the boot not to the sensor/sender . So what you need to do when you find this on the floor of the boot you just remove three screws (you can see them in the picture) to loose the cover and remove 5 more (those heavy rusty) to get inside. When you have all pulled out you need to check if sensor/sender is working or not. In my case I had broken PCB inside (do not ask how this happened... simply have no idea becasue bought the car with no working gauge already). So bought one from GT and found it is not possible to use it... becasue it is flipped (mirrored upside-down) . Picture above is sender unit from GT, below is my broken form GT-four. You can notice difference. So only chance was buying one from GT-four only... When I found one gauge was still dead. So bought also gauge (you can use any gauge from 6gen celica) and replaced mechanism on the back side (remove needle, unscrew three bolts and done): Since than it started to work .
