Just finished reading all this and I feel cheated since it just ended like 90% finished, 6 years ago: http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/art...e-thinking.aspx
Though I guess these days with K20/24 swaps being a thing doesn't make sense to use a Hayabusa engine unless you were chasing ultimate weight reduction. Thing is the K series still drops weight and makes more power than the Hayabusa engine, and more importantly has more torque and a power curve more befitting to the weight of a car. Still would've been cool to see the Hayabusa swap completed though since it was so close. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

Because I saved you the trouble of knowing it gets left unfinished, had I known I'd not have bothered reading it.
So from what I can gather a 1.8 BP(Miata) comes in around 315 pounds, a K24 is around 285 pounds and a K20 is around 275 pounds, then a 2ZZ is around 245 pounds. Though no one seems to care about putting the 2ZZ into anything aside from the MR2 Spyder. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

Why isn't the 2ZZ used in more engine swaps?

So it seems to get everything I want in a NB2 Miata that leaves SE and LS models or if for some reason a base model that has both the suspension and convenience packages. As that's the only way to get the better sport brakes, LSD, additional chassis bracing, as well as cruise control. The suspension package adds better sway bars, Bilsteins, and a shock tower bar as well though I'm not as concerned on those since the shocks will need replaced(or have been) and shock tower bar and sway bars are easy to add and surpassed in the aftermarket, that and on the LS it adds the 6-speed too. I'd prefer the 6-speed so pretty much just the SE or a LS with the suspension package. This doesn't help my anxiety because it's like, "I'm selling exactly what I wanted in a F-body and then to find exactly what I want in a Miata is going to be a nightmare." This is also what draws me to the NA8 since it's so much easier to find what all I want in a NA8, just get a B/C(later Popular Equipment/Leather) package or M-Edition. Job done. Never mind it'll need lots of modifications to get it to where it's on level with the NB2, but gah so much easier to find exactly what I'd want in that instance. That and it seems the NA8 is still a good grand or two cheaper than a comparable condition NB2, at least in my area even though it seems in other parts of the country people claim the pricing is closer, so that'd leave money for getting the NA8 where I'd want it. Bleh... OR IF MY LEG WOULD STOP BEING NUMB AND USELESS...

I think the desirable K20A2/K24A2 to 2ZZ-GE ratio is more equal, since those only came in the RSX Type-S or TSX. I know Celica and RSX sales weren't far off each other, rather or not how the TSX compares to Matrix and Corolla XRS as well as Vibe GT in regards to sales I dunno. Definitely true on the aftermarket, I think 300 reliable naturally aspirated horsepower isn't much of a stretch for the K24A2. Then again there's probably ways of taking a bland K series from a common Accord, CR-V, Element, etc... and making it just as good if not better than the higher spec K20A2/K24A2 with factory and aftermarket parts. Just K swap all the things, be the LS of imports.

Was watching another video where they were talking about cars and not getting caught up in numbers and specs, and how the best cars driving and dynamics wise aren't always posting the best numbers. Which as I've gotten older I can put numbers and specs aside, I just can't put aside the assault on my ears from an I4 or most V6. This is what being an audiophile gets me. Some turbocharged I4 aren't bad though, the Genesis is probably as good a sounding I4 as I've ever heard.

Yea, you can't turn a 1ZZ into a 2ZZ, that's for sure. I know the 2ZZ can do a reliable 200whp NA these days with bolt ons and good tuning, with some tinkering inside they get a little over that however it needs to be remembered that it's also a 1.8l engine where as the 20 and 24 are a good deal bigger, no replacement for displacement of course. Lb for lb (and liter to liter) the 2ZZ does put out some impressive numbers, but it can't grow past 2 liters and even making a 2 liter 2ZZ is touchy from the reliability standpoint.

Would just be interesting to see a 2ZZ-GE in a Miata or the like given the weight savings. Though I guess all the work needed you'd really have to love the 2ZZ or the idea of saving another 20-30 pounds over the K20.
I dunno, trying to hype myself for a Miata so I'll press the post button on Craigslist. Like after driving the one my brother had I'm fine with what's there power wise and I really liked the rest of the car, it's just the sound made me not want to rev it out since there was a direct correlation in engine speed and ear irritation. Worst of all it seems any aftermarket exhausts for it just sound worse than what's already there from the factory. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

So from looking around it'd be roughly $1,200 to get the NA8 on par with the NB2, not including seats or cost of replacement parts when upgrading things like the brakes and suspension. I don't figure including shocks, rotors, or pads is fair considering those are things I'd want to replace on the NB2 anyway. So probably about $1,500 including seats, which kind of takes away the pricing advantage that might be there in getting the NA8 over the NB2. Though the NA8 should be a little better since that includes the Fyin' Miata frame rails with butterfly brace as well as their sway bars, the rest being actual NB2 replacement parts as far as brakes and the rest of the suspension. Of course coil-overs might be the way to go once you take in the total cost of taking the NA8 to stock NB2 suspension. I dunno, a lot to think about and consider but I know I like the NB2 as is so that's probably what I'll do. It'd be nice to find a 2003 Special Edition since it'd have everything I want in a nice blue:
The only thing with the NB2 is that the headlights are kinda meh, with no way to easily improve them. Can put in 9011 and 9012 on a relayed harness, but that's about it. Not sure if doing a D2S on the low beam is even possible. Whereas the NB1 has H4 so D2S would be easy, and then the NA has 7" sealed beams so going to Cibie or Hella ECE H4 with some 100W bulbs on a relayed harness would be easy. Which I guess everything can be added to the NB1 or NA8 aside from some of the chassis improvements of the NB2 that were core structural changes. Sigh, time to research NB2 lighting I suppose. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

And apparently it's a pain on the NB2: https://www.miataturbo.net/general-miata-ch...adlights-92084/
Sigh, curse my terrible night vision. The few times in the Miata at night it was barely enough, not enough to be comfortable anyway, and even though it has projectors the HID still glare some being halogen projectors and the light output is meh being DOT crap. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

At least no one can ever accuse of me of rushing into things without being thorough. Until I find a suitable adopter for the Firebird might as well figure out exactly what it is that I'm wanting to replace it. I just want to make sure I make the right choice overall, especially since whatever it ends up being has a rather large void to fill.
