yes there is a chip. the best thing to do would be to go to your local body shop (go to a good one, dont be cheap) and have your ECU upgraded. this will make a huge difference in your performance (i know it does in VW at least. 1.8L golf went from 132hp to 202hp after upgrade). this is a great upgrade if you are goin to add alot of hardware to yoru ride. oh, and it will be a bit** on gas!

Hi guys.
2 years ago, I look at the VW 20v turbo 1.8 engine. I had a 4AGE 20v Black Top with 180 - 190HP. I was very disappointed with the VW w/ its specs. The car to my understanding is detune. It can do a hell lot more that the 180 it has. My estimate, it can do 220 -240HP. I am not sure if injectors change is needed, but it made me love toyota more. As always, buy a piggy back fuel controllerlike the apex SAFC or change to a new ecu which can be program. When you need to make more power, you do not hae to go out and buy a new chip, but hit the controls and you are off. -------------------- West_Minist

Yea, I'll have a S-AFC one of these days. (xmas next year i guess) I'll just have to talk to 'speed toe' about tuning it.

You should try the piggyback system made by Perfect Power. They have the SMT piggyback systems which run about 300-500 depending on which model you get and allow much control to be had. They also offer a standalone system for the 3sgte and I think they make one for the 5sfe but you need to call about it....this is called the PRS system. I can't remember the cost, but they are very impressive with loads of things you can adjust to your liking...as well as having presets for racing or for daily driving....which you can't do with an upgraded ECU. With an upgraded ECU, there's bnothing extra iny uor car....but your fuel mileage is horrible all of the time.

So is it the SMT or the PRS that has dual setups for racing and daily driving?

I just got the Jet Performance Chip upgrade and couldn't be happier. The thing about this upgrade is that you do it as your last upgrade outside of nitrous. When you send your chip in, you give them a list of your upgrades, and the taylor the chip to that. I got about 15 wheel HP. Right off the bat it was the best upgrade I've done - BAR NONE. Better than my intake and custom exhaust combined. The Venum 400 has gotten terrible reviews and will reduce your gas milage by at least 2-3 mpg. There is one bad thing about my upgrade. You have to mail your ECU in, and i couldn't afford to be without my car for the four days it took (I sent it in 2 day, they return it overnight) so I bought an ECU from a junk yard and tested it for a week to make sure it worked. Jet said that because it was not the "origional" ECU there would be no warranty. I said go ahead and do it. I can run 89 octane with no problem and my gas milage is the same as it was before (even though I floor my car quite a bit more now). I paid $380 for the upgrade and $100 for the second ECU. They even said I could run up to a 40 shot of nitrous with it without having to retard the timing! That is what I plan on doing next. Hope this post was a help.

I think I am probably done tweaking my engine just becasue I have exhausted all of the possible N/A modification components for our engines. I would like to do more, but have not found anything out there that I do not already have. (still waiting on the Arospeed headers) I have the Ingen short ram intake with a custom cold air setup that routes air from under the front bumper to the intake filter, as free flow exhaust as you can get with a costom dynomax high-flow cat and a magnaflow muffler (which by the way sounds really great, no "ricer" sound, just an nice deep note) I have an MSD 6300 SCI ignition with Tach adapter, NGK wires and Denso Iridium plugs and of course the Jet Chip. I can't find a good throttle body yet, and I'm looking into underdrive pulleys and a possible cam. I will have the ZEX kit before summer. I posted my car here but it hasen't showed up on the member rides yet. here is a link to my car domain site.....http://www.cardomain.com/id/longshank

Wow, sounds like you still got alot in mind for your car. Maybe you should have held out on your ECU upgrade.

Yeah, I know I guess I should have waited. But every upgrade I do I tell myself this will be the last one. But as far as the ECU goes, remapping the timing, fuel ratio etc. should not effect mods like the lightened underdrive pulleys, flywheel , etc. They make their power by reducing weight on the crank. The general rule of thumb is that for evey pound lightened off the crank will result in 2.7 hp gained (this according to Unortodox) I'm really looking forward to installing the Zex kit. I've heard nothing but good things about it. I was going to go with a wet kit like Nitrous Express, but an performance mechanic told me that there is always a chance of puddling, and he has installed well over a hundred of the ZEX kits and in his option is the safest on the market. I'm starting to ramble.."everybody needs to believe in something, I believe I'll have another beer."
