Ok here's the gist, My 5s tranny is just about ready to bite the dust at 235k miles which is damn good if you ask me. My question is, will the 3SGE transmission directly bolt up to my GT without any modifications? I was thinking that it would since it's from a "S" block engine, but I wasn't sure.
Also, I plan on doing a 3sgte swap as early as this winter. Would the 3SGE transmission work fine for this? Are there any advantages that the 3SGE transmission would have over my stock GT tranny? These are all questions I need answered ASAP because I'm about to buy a 3SGE transmission and I want to know if it'll be beneficial to me! PS- For anyone who is wondering WHY I chose the 3SGE, it's because I know someone who has one that has only 30k miles, and is willing to let it go for really cheap. Thanks, -Josh |

It should bolt up. Although what modifications needed I don't know. What gen 3S-GE is this tranny coming off of? Because the 3rd gen 3S-GE had a longer final drive ratio, so if you bolt it up to your 5S-FE, it's going to slow you down.

you might have an issue with the clutch, I'm not sure if they are the same. I know the 3sge has 21 tooth bellhousing shaft, while the 5sfe has a 20 I believe. So make sure the everything lines up right.
As far as the whole tranny, It should bolt up just fine. DEF -------------------- I will return one day. |

I'm not sure what generation the transmission is yet. As far as the clutch goes, I was planning on replacing that anyways when I switched transmissions. Where would be a good place to get an aftermarket clutch for the 3sge transmission and is there a part number specific for 3sge clutches?
Also, which would perform better when bolted up to the 3sgte... the 5s tranny, or the 3sge tranny? Thanks, -Josh |

To answer your second question, it depends on what 3S-GE tranny. But if it's the 3rd gen 3S-GE tranny, a 3S-GTE with the 5S tranny should be quicker due to the final drive ratio. |

I believe the tranny on the 3sge is the s54 if that is true it is the same as the 5s tranny and will have the same gear ratios. Don't order a clutch from over seas, the 3sge was here in the us in the earlier celicas so just get a clutch kit for one of those. |

Depends on what 3S-GE. 2nd gen 3S-GE's come with either S52 or S53 tranny's. 3rd gen 3S-GE's come with S54 tranny's. Yes both 3rd gen 3S-GE and 5S-FE run S54 tranny's, but like I stated before, the S54 on the 3S-GE has a longer final drive gear ratio.
