new intake has issues, need help... Options

I got a custom short-ram intake put into my celi (SE) about three months ago. ever since then, it has been like the car has a hard time taking air in when i turn the car on. it will start but the intake will not start sucking air in right away therefore the rpm's start out very low (about 200) untill i rev it up a little. sometimes revving up the engine will get the intake to breathe, but lately not even that is helping.

I'm thinking that it is an oxygen sensor issue, or maybe a computer issue. but the weird thing is that it didn't start messing up untill after i got the intake (i'm using the original sesnsor and the the original comp settings).

does anybody have any ideas as to what might be the problem? and maybe some troubleshooting ideas?

my car has been doing that, but I've reverted back to the stock intake. It only does it sometimes, when the engine is warm. It'll start and just go to about 300-400 RPM and kinda studder until I give it gas, then it'll idle right. Tonight it would start then die, start then die, start then after I rev it it would be at about 500, then even out.

is the filter clean,
and did you install the IAS into the intake piping?

well yeah, i need to clean the filter, but it's been doing that for a while, even when the filter was clean. and whats the IAS? (sorry...newbie) if that's the oxygen sensor...yeah, it's in the piping. would an old sensor cause these kinds of problems?

Manny, you mean the IAT sensor?

The oxygen sensor is in the exhaust system, not the intake. When you start the car it is in closed loop mode, so the O2 sensor will not have any effect; but if its bad, then you'll get poor fuel economy.

How long has it been since you replaced your fuel filter?

That might cause the symptoms you have described...I would reccomend you use Seafoam and just to be safe, reset your ECU.

Make sure all your wires are properly connected and you didn't knock something loose. When I installed an Intake on the 5s in my camry it wouldn't start at all. After a while off freaking out, it was the igniter that had a poor connection to ground.

Make sure that the intake is grounded (might not make a diff.) and the ignition systems are still grounded.

i just replaced the fuel filter about 5 or 6 months ago (about 10,000-12,000 miles maybe).

what is seafoam? is it some type of cleaner?

Alot of our Celicas idle low on startup like that. Doubtful that it has anything to do with the intake, unless theres something shoved into the pipe to restrict the air from entering.

My IAT sensor has been zip-tied outside my intake for more than two years now, and no problems. I highly doubt that it has anything to do with that sensor either.



Heres what I suspect- It's most likely an electronic flaw on our cars, that the engine sometimes doesn't adjust the idle properly at startup and thats why it bogs down. It's happened to me only a few times, and other people have experienced the same problem....but it doesnt seem to be too serious of a condition. Try resetting the ECU, however I beleive this might only work on the OBD-I vehicles so it may not help you. Also, to assist this problem you might try unscrewing the gas cap to try and relieve some of the fuel pressure. Screw it back on and fire up the car....it might help it idle easier when you first start it up.

Of course with any problem on here, its pretty damn hard to diagnose it without looking at the motor in person. Could be that your timing belt is falling off and we wouldn't know.

When I got my SRI, I had the problem where i'd turn the car on and it would be reved at like 2.5k and bounce around. I dono if this is what your experinceing but, my problem was I forgot to cover up NOS injection hole. I didn't use the hose that came with it. Just feed unwanted air into the engine quicker witch made the car undriveable.

well, what happens is that when i try to turn on the car with my remote starter, the car will turn over and then bog all the way down. then it is not running any more, just the battery is on (radio, lights, etc.). when the intake is properly sucking air it idles at about 1,200. when i first start the car in the morning (and i have it actually running) without sucking air properly, it idles at about 400-500. i still need to clean the filter...maybe that's what is doing it.

but that's a pretty weird problem huh? do a lot of people have this problem?
