I was just thinking, what is is that makes a car sound so crappy, like really the fart can mufflers.
I know of alot of cars that are fast as hell, and have all these mods, and they just sound soo ugly.
I mean its pretty common you see, or hear a honda fartin around your neighborhood, but if Im not mistaken our cars dont sound that way, and I have heard with many diff types of mufflers and exhausts.
Is there a certain cause for that sound....even some cars with good brand exhaust systems just dont sound right.
Im in the turboing process for my gt, and Im trying to avoid farts at all cost....lol wink.gif

all 4-cylinder engines have a higher frequency? whine to them.
hondas usually sound different than most engines...no clue why.

all it should be is proper sound deadening.
a resonator and a good muffler should get you on your way to sounding less "ricey"

in some exhaust it's somewhat wanted(IMO). i think the Fujitsu Legalis(i butchered the spelling) is always very whiney.

If you want more info on mufflers, Manny MIGHT be able to help you, as i think he researched before deciding on the magnaflow? muffler. . .

Try and go for an exhaust that dose not have a rolled in end to the tip, (if you know what I mean) as this adds to the crappy sound you hear on Honda`s....I used to have a Civic Si that was totally standard, but when the exhaust "went" it was cheaper for me to buy an aftermarket one...as I had little money at the time this is what I bought, it was a "Janspeed" IIRC with a rolled in tip....sounded bloody awfull, resonated around the car and made long trips a living nightmare.
Anyway...this should go some way in preventing that horrible sound.

A nice, long resonator will help give the exhaust note a much deeper tone. That's about all I know tongue.gif

The best way to get a better exhaust note, of course, is to swap in a V6 or V8. biggrin.gif

the way you get a deeper tone is not by how many cylinders you have, but how many liters are in the engine. Usaully tho when you have 5+ liters you have a v6 or a v8 (like mustangs, camaros, ect.) and when you have a crappy 1.3 liter its usaully in a 4 cylinder honda, acura, ect. MOST of our cars are 2.2 liters, so it doesnt usaully sound that bad. I prefer the mustang sound over a civic anyday,I just dont think it would look/sound right on our cars. I prefer a silent car.

for sound its about your motor defenitly but things you can do to aid in the increase in noise quality are things like

QUALITY parts...yes this means MORE MONEY but its worth it
hks, greddy, magnaflow are all good products that can produce good tones

RESONATOR...a nice long one with drilled (NOT slotted) core is best, this reduces and/or eliminates the loudness and drone of an exhaust along with deepening the over all tone..

I like mine. Strate pipe sounds the best. I do get a little shrill sound at about 1.9k-2.1k. But then it clears up. I don't think my exhaust sounds the best, but it was cheap and effective. I'm considering a resonater to help calm things down a bit. Depends on price.

speakin of resonators..where can i get one.. i heard the local muffler shops have them and they arent that expensive, only like $30-$40 installed. does that soun right?

I have 2 1/2' straight pipe on the exhaust with a 2' cherry bomb where the resonator use to be. The exhaust comes out right infront of the passenger rear tire, straight pipe with a bolt on exhaust tip, and the car sounds awesome. It has a nice deep sound. I have to agree with Insanity-74, my friend just put a muffler like that on his integra... it sounds awful.

Heres my theory on why an exhaust will sound like it does.

1.) Displacement. Cars with a larger displacement motor will inherently sound deeper due to the size of the engine. Likewise, a car with more cylinders usually has a deeper sound because the exhaust note is of the collective tone of all 6 or 8 cylinders firing, for example. Also, with cylinders usually comes more displacement....deeper tone.

2.) Engine design. An inline 4 cylinder like our cars have won't sound like a EJ20 horizontally opposed 4 cylinder in the WRX. They sound very deep in comparison even with less displacement because of the way the engine is designed. It doesn't have a smooth whine up to redline like the I-4, they sound like a series of pops that really adds to a rumbling deep tone. Hondas are a low displacement motor that really get loud when revved hard....but also the rice sound you often hear is the result of the following factor.....

3.) The exhaust. If you have a larger diameter pipe it'll usually add up to a louder exhaust. A resonator will allow you to manipulate that tone, along with the design of the muffler. If I put a canister style or "fart can" muffler on the same piping I have now as opposed to my GReddy setup, it would certainly be louder because of the path in which the exhaust and engine sound exits the car. Usually when I see a "ricey" sounding car its because there is a huge ugly canister muffler that just kinda emits sound and exhaust in whatever direction instead of a free-flowing and focused route.

Thats pretty much my opinion on why exhausts sound like they do. wink.gif

Just because something costs more, doesn't make it better. Look at the injen intake for the Celica's compared to a modified Accord intake. You'll pick up more with the Accord intake and you'll only pay 20% on the price.

Definetely. All of my exhaust including piping, muffler, all of it is custom made by my fabricator and i get so many compliments on it. Granted alot would like it louder but it works for me and i can hear it in my house when i have the car warming up so thats loud enough if you ask me. Even had a cop say that it was too loud when it was in neutral - lol

We call them big bore exhausts in new nealand just a muffler tip not full exhaust system doesn't do anything except cause alot of noise we even have cars without rims like nana spec cars with b/bore exhausts they will be making a new law soon to stop noisy exhausts.
