I took my car to the muffler shop for a quote on how much my stuff was going to run me to get isntalled, and I have 2 catylitic converters! WHY!!?!?! one is right under the manifold, between the downpipe and the manfiold (or looks this way) can anybody explain why this would be, and if this is restricting to airflow or not?

I'm guessing you have a 94-95 because 96+ only have one cat because emissions are controlled better with the OBDII (I believe, thats the reason). as far as I know the extra cat doesn't hurt your airflow any more than the Celicas with only one cat.

My '95 ST is not a CA car and had 2 converters.
I just checked my BGB, you're right. New bit of information I had not really cared to look into until now. This post has been edited by S_C_M: Oct 17, 2006 - 4:31 PM |

I wonder which would give more performance and less emissions: to swap out the two OBDI converters for one OBDII converter, or two just use two OBDI converters? -------------------- 94 GT - Sold -------- 69 Pontiac Lemans - Sold 88 Alltrac - Sold ---- 04 WRX - Sold 00 GT-S - Sold ------ 91 Miata - project/drift car 95 GT - Sold -------- 96 GT - New Daily Drive |

Yeah what happens if you just put in a universal cat in place of the two cats on a ST? (legal wise... can the cops check to see how many cats its supposed to have?)

Yup, I've owned a 96 Camry and it had two, and my 96 Celica ST has the same setup. Essentially you could remove the one under the car, but the top one that is part of the manifold is gonna turn on your CEL if you don't reconnect everything that was on the old manifold. You won't get pulled over for anything and if you're CEL isn't on then you'll pass emissions. I did get pulled over in my Camry once for my exhaust being too loud though lol.
Camry had stock manifold with 2.5 inch exhaust (manifold back), high-flow magniflow cat under car, and magniflow muffler. -------------------- |
