What are the "pros" of having an interference engine?

Interference engine - A conventional modern engine design. It is a configuration of which when a valve is open at it’s greatest point, it exists in the same area that the piston travels into, and will be in shortly. The benefits of this design are a closer tolerance, shorter engine, more freedom in combustion chamber design and valve angle. The downfall is if and when a timing belt/chain fails, the valve will not not close, and the piston will strike it. (http://paultan.org/car-jargon/)

Yes they are non-interference. Shouldnt be any damage to the valves.

What celica engines does this apply to? I had a friend who was getting rid of his 93 gt and the timing belt broke and his mechanic said the valves could be bent, he gave it away for 300 bucks...i believe it was a 5sfe? Thats the only reason why i didn't touch it at the time (Years ago).

your friend got jipped

I had no idea there was such a thing as a non-interference engine. somebody donated an engine to my auto class that had a timing belt break on it (straight 6 BMW motor). we pulled the engine apart and a couple of the valves were severly bent. surprisingly the pistons and rods were ok though...

knowing the 5sfe is a non-interference definately gives me some piece of mind though.

Damn Dustin.....I'd be willing to help out if I have a few days off when you do it.

Might just be easiest to yank out the whole engine, then while its out index everything and do the head gasket, timing belt, and any other parts you may want to refurbish while its out. All that would be required would be to lay the whole harness on top of the engine, remove the axles, coolant and p/s lines and then hoist that mofo outta the car once the mounts are unbolted.

If all the parts needed were on hand, 2-3 people could get it done within 2 days, easily. Let me know if you'd like a hand, I'll come up if you want.

I want this question answered by the knowledgable on the site bc i have been wondering the same thing, are our engines interference or not? Bc I have been wondering whether I should be looking into changing my belt just to be on the safe side since i've put 41k on it since i bought it and i have no clue if it is still a stock belt or not. I plan on doing road trips this summer and i don't want my car breaking down anytime soon.

Change the belt regardless. Even if no other damage is done, you will still be stranded if the timing belt breaks. If you are always close to home, it may not be a big deal, but it's not something I would want to happen on a road trip. You would have to get the car towed, and you probably won't have options like doing it yourself or searching for the best price. I'd replace the water pump at the same time and check the oil seals for leaks.

I've pulled a few engines before Corey wink.gif

the problem is I don't have a hoist or garage here to pull the engine, all the work is going to be done outside my house on my street kindasad.gif (at least I live close to the end on a dead end street)

I'm gonna tackle this in a few weeks (once it gets warmer), I know I can handle it, I just need a few days off in a row and I'll be good to go.

It's actually the other way around.
Most 00 ^ are interference.

For the most part [there ARE exceptions, such as the 2UZFE I believe is interference] if it has a belt, it's non interference [freewheeling]. If it has a chain, it's interference.

Dustin, I MIGHT be able to give you guys a hand if you need it.

Yay for me 2... My belt stripped the 23rd. Just yesterday I was able to get a wrench in there. Took me 1 1/2 hours to get it apart, now just waiting for the belt and tensioner.

BTW on the ZZ engines you have a Timing Chain, so it's less likely to snap like a belt.

OK I'm thinking that next weekend (the 28-29th - weather permitting) should be a good time to get this done. Stef and I pulled many of the accessories off the head today and by tomorrow everything should be set for the head to come out.

So if you guys can give me a hand either Saturday or Sunday (or both) this is when I'm gonna need some help.

what I'm hoping for is to do the head gasket on Saturday, then finish up the timing belt/water pump on Sunday.

Just curious, how did you determine that the belt broke? Did you actually pull the cover and check?
