My smog is due soon in california but I would like to pass with out paying some dude extra. I'd like to do some more upgrades before the two year deal. Couple questions,

If i had the stock intake, one cat removed replaced with strait pipe, and one high flow cat you guys think i could pass cali smog (visual test) legally?

Is true you can not pass smog with a header that is not carb legal?

No. Only legal mods (carb certified) and stock stuff can pass. You can't pass without a cat... the cat CLEANS the emissions... so removing it will obviously hurt emissions. It'll also fail visual.

I dont think i was clear enough with my question. There would be a cat on the car, just one, it would be a high flow carb certified. Visually the car would look fine because it is not uncommon for cars to have just one cat.
Dunno, just trying to get around the law, legally. wink.gif
Too bad there are no carb certified headers for 6gcs likw there are more popular cars with just as little hp.

my friend has a trd header on his mr2 and it failed, and he was told trd headers are cali legal.
you should just save up some money and go to that mr2 guy in chico and have him put in a 95 or 96 california mr2 3sgte in your car, that would pass smog.

The TRD headers specifically say "for off-road use only" as opposed to "Carb legal in 50 states" like their intakes and other perrformance parts. He should have read a little more.
Also I've only seen headers for 22R engines. Never seen TRD headers for 5S-FE in any car. Anyone have a link? Would be easy work to modify them for the 6th Gen. That's what I did to my MR2 header. Had to cut the downpipe cause the 5S sits a little higher in the MR2. Also had to totally remake the b-pipe for obvious reasons.

Let me make myself more clear. NO. The cat under the car is a secondary cat that acts mostly as a "check". Based on the book specs, CA spec Celica ST's must have TWO cats, one in the exhaust manifold, one underneath... so you're not gonna fool anyone. Why even take out the cat? It's not gonna free up a ton of horsepower or anything. If you MUST... do it after you smog.

The reason there aren't a lot of CARB cert performance parts... it costs money to CARB certify aftermarket parts... and the celica community isn't exactly a bustling boom town... so unless companies can make money... ain't gonna happen.

Just throw ur stocks back on!!! its take sometime, but worth it. I used to live in Central, CA. I also did it for my bro in v6 eclipse a couple of times. that sucked!!

The plan is to take out both cats strait though pipe, header, and a pully after smog and suspention are finished. I figure like 110 at the wheels and have a fun little car. wink.gif

If your goal is 110whp, im just curious why you feel you want that number? Seems kinda like a waste only to get you in more trouble, gutting the cats out of a cali car will get you a "gross polluter" ticket. Just a heads up.

you do realize your basing your horsepower gain theory back in 1975 when the cat was introduce. Back in the day cars ran very dirty and clogged up the catalytic converters. Therefore you gain horsepower from removing the catalytic converter.

BUT our celica;s are fuel injected that run much cleaner. Your catalytic converter is probably not clogged and your will not gain much horsepower.

The horsepower gain will probably equal to a good tune up job. such as new distributor cap and rotor, oil change with synthetic oil, and a new air filter.
