so today i had to fill out the application for a passport ...... my family got a letter in the mail saying we have to get passports for our trip where flying to PuertoRico for my grandmothers 75 birthday and what sucks is that we have never needed a passport before seeing as how Puerto Rico is part of the US but it seems that by september 30th anyone that travels by air will need a passport and i think its even if its in the us as long as your flying by air but either way just wanted to know everyones thougths on it start a convo......

You should also know that because of this, the passport department is backed up. It may take up to three months to get a passport. Many people have had to delay/cancel their trips because their passport has not come in time.

Go apply for it now. Like today or tomorrow. I wouldnt be so sure that 5 months is long enough any more. It took mine over 3 months to get to me and they are getting more and more backed up every day.

as long as you show proof that you applied for it, they should accept it due to the fact that it is backed up. my whole family minus me is leaving for canada tomorrow and none of them have passports.

The only other thing that sucks is my sisters kid, shes 7 years old and the father hasent been around for 5 years and we have no way of finding him or knowing where he is and it seems that we have to have both parents there to get her passport but i guess will see how that works out

In the UK we have passport offices where you can go and queue and get you passport the same day (you have to wait about 4 hours in the queue but you walk away with the necessary) there are only a couple in the country but this is an option to us if we need the papers in a hurry.
Do you guys not have the same option?

Not likely. Mainly because in the U.S. we don't often do much border crossing as you would in Europe.
