HI!
I applied for a private loan for my tuition and asked for a few extra thousands to finally do my engine swap. I have been reading a lot about the 3 engines that I am considering but I simply do not know enough of the subject to make the best decision. 1st I live in california from what I understand I can only put a newer engine than mine on my car, since my current engine is 94, would a 3s-gte out of a 93 celica work? or is that just a myth? Any recomendations on where to get the engine would be great too. I have seen a few sites already but I would like to buy it from somewhere you guys trust already. 2nd which engine would give me less troubles? I use my car almost everyday and I would need my car to be just as reliable, only reason I am switching engines is for some power gain and to replace my 200000 mile engine, that is still running strong but a change would be good now. 3rd pretty much the small things, passing smog, gas mileage, any tips and suggestions? I will be getting my money in less than a month so by then I expect to have decided on the engine, and where to buy it. I have guys that are going to do the swap so thats not an issue. Thanks! |

Legally, you need at least the same year or newer engine that is available in the US. So, a 93 3sgte engine is not legal on your 94 Celica. JDM 3sgte engine is never legal in California, unless you find a way to install an EGR system. Otherwise, you will need to find a place to pass you. If you leave the 3sgte engine alone, it is a very reliable engine. The reliability go down when yoyu turn up the boost. However, people that know what they are doing usually don't have problem with 14 psi on stock turbo. Like I mentioned above, if the guy that inspect your car know what he is doing, you will not pass. -------------------- _Gary

Same deal. There is no 94+ 3SGE that is offered in the USA.
It is difficult to be 100% legal. Many people get around with it one way or another. Have you ever considered 1MZFE, V6 engine from Solara/Camry/Avalon? -------------------- _Gary
