Project sound insulation, Determined to get rid of some road noise Options

Alright guys, I decided to tackle a project similar to what a member on here did by getting rid of some noise with a carpeting material. I'm attempting the same thing, except with my door panels and rear panels. I went to Home Depot and bought a 6'x9' roll of carpet padding for $30, along with a can of 3M rubber and vinyl spray adhesive. I already tried to deaden the sound a bit by using some extra Dynamat I had, but it didn't help much at all. Spray the door panel on the areas where you will be placing the padding, then rip pieces to the size of your choice and place accordingly. WARNING: You might want to let these panels sit overnight, because the smell isn't too pleasant.

After I get everything finished I'll let you guys know how well this worked. I spent $40 in materials with tax, so it would be a pretty cheap solution to getting rid of some exterior road noise. Not the prettiest solution, but I feel it should help out greatly.

I put the interior back in and put the car to the test on the highway. I must say that it's almost silent now. I will still have some slight noise though due to the lowering and my 17's. I would say that it's VERY MUCH worth the $40. I will be using what I have left to put under my carpet whenever I get brave enough to pull it out.

that foam absorbs the noise so well. Has anybody ever seen a quiet room? They use foam. I like that idea for my doors. will try it

It worked wonders on my panels. I also stuffed some in the paneling where the rear speakers go.

I'd like to put some under the carpet, how difficult is it to take out?

3 hour job.

1.5 to take out and 1.5 to put in

have to take the center console out, etc ill be painting mine very soon

Not very, I'm sure overall it maybe added 6-7 lbs? The doors do feel slightly heavier.

Yeah, but I did that nearly a year ago. It didn't do as well as I had hoped, but the padding FAR exceeded my expectations and I'd say it's better than Dynamat as well as more cost efficient.

well what most people dont understand is that the dynamat doesnt act as a noise barrior like the padding does, the mat is to weigh down the pannels so the speakers and bass do not flex the pannel and it helps reduce distortion flexing.

Aye: dampening = weight, to reduce resonance and sympathetic vibration. Insulation = absorption, to reduce transmission.

The one that's popular on Corvette forums, which I'll do once my Focal door speakers come in, is duct insulation. It's a foam backed by foil, self-adhering. The idea is that the road noise is absorbed through the foam, what makes it through the foam bounces off the foil and is further absorbed in the foam. Frost King/Thermwell is the usual brand, carried at Lowes and Home Depot.

Yeah my dad was telling me about underliner spray. I'd like to give that a try as well.

one of my celicas is corked dyno matted and foam insulated. Don't hear much road noise, but I still hear that 3sgte. As for my St I'm going to see what I can go with about $50 worth of foam and $50 worth of cork.... it should be silent

I've seen that underliner spray - it's available at most auto supply stores actually. It's like a black rubberizing spray that you coat the undercarriage of your car with. Dealerships charge like a few hundred dollars for it, but it's really like ten bucks for a can of it. Only thing is, you have to get your car up on a lift if you can, so you can de-grease it thoroughly before you apply the spray. The spray will also protect against rust (good for those who live where it snows and the roads are salted)

Great job with that carpet padding! I bought some foil-backed insulation stuff to put down under my carpet, but I won't have enough for the doors so I think I'll do what you did and make a little visit to Home Depot! I'm on 17s (and will be lowered soon) and I HATE the road noise!!!

No, I'm just not going to do the carpet. I'm satisfied with how the other panels helped it, but I imagine the carpet would greatly help out as well.
