Hi everyone, I just did a smog test for the my registration renewal. I passed all the emissions stuff expect but failed the comprehensive visual inspection due to a craked air intake hose which was just taped together. kindasad.gif

Should I just buy a replacement for the hose from the yard or just install a aftermarket filter?
Should I go for Injen or Weapon R or which other brands would you guys recommend?

unless the aftermarket intake is carb legal, your gonna fail smog again anyways. im not sure if the weapon R is but i know the injen one has the carb sticker iirc.

hmmm... just checked out the weapon r site and verified their EO# vs the one in CARB site.
E0# D 489-1 is CARB legal.

Its also cheaper than Injen's but I wonder how they differ in performance.

the injen is pretty dam expensive. for something as minor as a SRI i dont think you should spend that much.

unless you got money to burn, i'd go with the weapon R. or you can always go with the CAI mod.

Damn it must suck to live in Cali laugh.gif In Houston our emissions testing is every bit as strict but you won't fail visual over a mod [Except EGR delete obviously]

Yeah. My cousin had installed the Injen intake for his car. Its really expensive and i dont have the budget right now kindasad.gif Weapon R is my second option.

Hell yeah, It felt i was ripped off for smog yesterday! burned $50 for nothing s***!
Excuse my words but it was a whole BS to fail smog due to the visual inspection. mad.gif

You can usually find an Injen intake used for pretty decent. I have one that I bought from a member of the board, and I've been very happy with it. As for any performance difference between Injen or WeaponR, I doubt there's much difference considering you're not going to see any real HP gain to begin with anyway. But if you want it new, and WeaponR is CARB legal, I'd get that one.

WeaponR just has a bad name cause it's link to Honda Humpers - an SRI is an SRI is an SRI for the most part. Get the one you want or the one that fits your wallet. biggrin.gif

People say Injen is expensive, which I guess it is. But I spent $212 (shipped) on a all black injen intake with matching heatshield...... Boy do it love it! I only picked Injen because I am familiar with their name, some parts, and carb approved. People tried to talk me into K&N filter on custom intake, you could go that route. My friends pass smog with that.

Whatever you do, don't forget to disconnect your battery for a bit while you install it, and then after install reconnect the battery so your cpu can read it. That way you can gain whatever benefits from aftermarket SRI it has to offer you.

stupid question: if i do a DIY custom intake, would it be CARB legal as long as it has a CARB approved filter?

nics, i think the best way(in order to save the most money) would be to make your own sri with a high-end filter and just remove it everytime you gotta smog. it only takes like 10 minutes to remove/install and u dont gotta spend over 100 bucks(200 bucks on the injen) on something that'll be the exact same as 50 bucks.

that way you can use the money for something where quality really matter ie suspension or tires or something.

****ty, I don't specifically know CA smog laws, but that won't effect your emissions at all [it's before the TB] and doesn't interfere with any emissions devices.
It's a repair, just like patching your exhaust.
I would think it's legal, and either the inspector is an idiot or is just being a dick.

If you put up a WTB or keep checking the buying and selling thread, you're bound to find someone. I got mine for dirt cheap shipped. The condition of it was great too, even though it was used, the filter was in great condition. Just keep all of your old intake/exhaust equipment to install before smogging, that's what I'm doing.

messing with your intake pipe or anything engine related is illegal in california unless it has carb cert. You can even use heater hose as an air hose in California. It just give them one more reason you fail you.

It really felt I was ripped off! After I get it fixed, I wont take it back to that shop.

I passed Test Only smog with a cracked intake pipe. it was crack at the throttle and had a opening. i use some plastic putting on it to harden up but didnt help. The smog guy saw it and had to get a flashlight to take a better look at it. laugh.gif but i still passed it anyways.

I would assume as long as the engine is running fine a repaired intake pipe would be legal and legit. :shrug:

I understand this, I wasn't referring to him replacing the hose with another [non CARB certified] hose, I was referring to the tape he said he had on the hose.
That makes it a repair, not a modification, just like if you repaired a hole in your exhaust with an exhaust patch.

To me that should be legal, even in CA, though like I said I'm not 100% certain on how they work there.

Yea I agree with you all the way. But from what i take on it is. The car has to look 100% factory for it to pass.

If you patched up your intake piping properly without leaks, and they saw the patch; they would still fail you because it has been "modified".

It sucks too, because to replace that intake piping with the original one cost around ~50-100 dollars.

I once took a car to get smoged, and they failed the car because there was electrical tape on the intake box that holds the filter.
