It really is all just personal preference. Lil-Joe, your wing looks good on your car, but to each his own. I would only put factory spoilers on my car, i.e. the 3 post I have now or the GT4 spoiler. Not that I think either of them will help me any at all. From how I understand it, you have to be traveling at a very high speed for a spoiler to be any use at all, like in excess of 100 mph. That's just an estimate, by the way. I did not just look that number up, that's just how it's been explained to me. But from how I understand it, a spoiler is useless unless you are hauling a**.

Somebody please correct my numbers up there!

That's not stopping me from getting a GT4 wing though biggrin.gif

I like wings, hence mine.
I dont like the celica spoilerless, and the rear bumper site too high off the ground, so spoilerless just looks wrong to me.
standard spoilers look good, but i didnt want to look like every other celica.
Certainly wouldnt change back from mine now.

if you are just spouting off at the mouth don't bother.....it just spreads false information...

you DO NOT need to be going crazy fast to be effected by a wing.

also to be noted spoilers and wings are different. A spoiler is close to the body of the car where as a wing is offset in height by a reasonable amount

Ah, sorry! That's just how it was explained to me. I'm actually gonna go look some information up since I have nothing better to do right now. I also thought wing was just another word for spoiler.

So reading through these forums I see alot of people aren't too fond of wings and spoilers. My question is why? Why all the hate on them, am I missing out on something, enlighten please.

They look ridiculous, serve no purpose on 99% of the street cars that have them, add weight (and thus actually HURT performance), and did I mention they look ridiculous?

No trunk-mounted wing is actually doing anything for you other than making your car look like a child's toy.

Even Evo and STi wings are mostly unnecessary.

If you're worried that your stock car looks like a squished hamburger, maybe you should have bought a different car in the first place?

Also, to the kid who is working 3 jobs to save money for a big dumb ricer wing - save the money for something worthwhile like college or beer.

Richee, AFAIK, a spoiler and wing are differently functioning in that one pushes up and another pushes down. A wing on your car does nothing but push the tail down to increase the contact patch on the rear wheels, but since our cars are FWD it's basically useless.

Just out of interest then, does lil joe have a spolier or a wing, Personally i would have counted it as a spoiler,
and a wing more like mine that is fixed on with "bracket" so to speak, saying that, is a gt4 a wing or a spoiler because i always call it a wing, which is against what i just said confused.gif

Thanks in advance

i'd say the OP has a wing of sorts, albeit completely non functional except for being heavy. the GT4 i would consider a wing as well.

a spoiler is very close to the body and/or fully attached, where as a wing is up a good bit creating larger pressure zones.

Alright, I went and did some research. What I found out is playr158 is exactly right, that a spoiler is mounted lower to the car and a wing is much higher. They create downforce at 50 mph, but really become efficient at 70 mph. Without anything on the front of your car to help create downforce, a spoiler on the trunk is practically useless. Eh, I'm not gonna summarize the article, I'm just gonna give you guys the link and if you care to read it, you can. There's no need to hear me babble on.

http://www.torquecars.com/tuning/spoiler-aerodynamics.php

Keep in mind that this specific article refers more to higher performance cars than just average cars like my stock GT.

i used to love wings as a kid... but then got tired of seeing them on all whack ass cars on the streets.

many wings are affordable to most people so they buy them at autozone and stick it on their honda,

toyota, etc. along with other cheap body parts and over all an ugly car. I think because of that, wings

carry a bad stigma to them. people dont want be associated with "Rice" so they dont like wings.

Personally i think it distorts the celicas body lines which are streamlined.

Although i kinda like them on certain cars, STI, GT4, EVo... But if i bought anyone of those, i would

Remove the wing immidiately.

I notice a difference even at about 40 mph cornering with the gt4 wing, the 3 post seemed to feel
exactly the same as wingless but I noticed a distinct difference between spoilerless and the wing with
riser blocks. Same corners same speed, the rear washes out before the front wingless, and it seems
to be a toss up front vs rear with wing.

The risers also tip the spoiler forward, which may help?

i think a lot of the problems with wings is that they dont really flow with the nayural body style and design of the car. especially with our cars bein so curvy and having such distinct lines its hard to find a nice wing that flows with the body. kinda part of why a lot of people dont like the veilside body kit.

Actually I have a spoiler. Its bolted to the to trunk and flares out as it goes higher. And even the smallest lip is functional. Im think of our car as a big paper airplane. It cut two slits in the back on slightly above the other raise the cen portion up u have a wing on ur paper airplane. Now think how air moves over under and around our cars. Dont think of the speed just the air. Now put a wing or a spoiler in the middle of the airflow. Wut happens is that airflow gets cut in half. U now have air flowing over the and under the air flowing under is trying to rise. while the air over is trying to lower. Easy way I can I can describe it is u get the same effect from a wing or spoiler as u do when u put ur hand out the window of a car and raise up and down. and magicly we have wut is know to be called down force. It really doesnt matter the speed.
