Your car isnt supposed to go into first easily at all unless you make a nearly full stop.....thats the work of synchros. So when you go to stop, only downshift to 2nd, then press in your clutch and gently let the gear slide into 1st. The gears only line up correctly when your doing like maybe 5 mph or under, due to the synchros that have to line up your gears correctly.
EDIT- Also, my gearbox grinds a little when shifting from 3rd to 4th....so i have a similar situation cuz my car has high mileage and probably needs some new synchros too. hmm ya i sometimes have problems in 2nd gear. When i decide to downshift into 2nd gear at 40 mph at 4300 rpm's it can tend to grind every once in a while. But in 1st or 3rd i have no problem downshifting. In 1st gear i can downshift when im going 30mph at 5,000 rpms and 1st gear tops out at 35mph. the same with 3rd gear. so why is it that its only 2nd gear that does it for me. The previous owner was a chick. i got the car at 75,000 miles
