Dont paint the grill, just buy one in that color. It'll look alot better. As far as the emblems I have the solid ones (silver toyota badge w/blue surrounding it) kind of like those red honda ones we all see.
I just sent akirad1 the rough for the write up, waiting to see what i forgot as he did do most of the work on this. I just took picks and held things. But all in all we should have it up soon.

Headliner/Sunroof Motor Removal and Installation

Tools needed:
Slotted and Phillips Screwdrivers.
Ratchet and 10 mm socket.

Step 1:
Remove three screws that are found in the back, towards the rear window. As well as the ones holding on the "clothes hanger" tab.

(Hard to tell in the pic, but there are 5 screws total)
Step 2:
Remove visors, dome light, and rear view mirror. All of these are fairly simple and require the use of a phillips screwdriver, with the exception the rear view mirror (requires that you remove the cover with a slotted screw driver.)


Step 3:
Remove driver and passenger side pillars (although you do not need to totally remove them, it makes working around the headliner easier). Loosen rear plastics enough to move headliner. (skip to step 5 if your just replacing the sunroof motor)

Step 4:
Remove headliner.
Step 5:
There are two options when it comes to removing and installing the motor. 1) You could remove the headliner all together and do the work, or 2) You can push the headliner back enough to give you clearance to work around. Either way both methods will work fine, we suggest pushing the headliner back to allow you enough room to work around.
Step6:
Remove motor. This can be done by removing the bolt holding the relay on first (while the relay is loose disconnect it), followed by the three holding on the motor. ALl the bolts are 10 mm or phillips screwdriver type. Be warned that you will need to support to motor as you remove the bolts because the motor will fall right out.


Step 7:
Installation. Pretty much opposite as the disassembly. Reinstall motor, and test it first by hooking up all lines and the dome light/sunroof controls. Reinstall headliner (or slide it in place), snap the plastics back into place, return all screws to where they belong. Enjoy a properly functioning sunroof!

Thats pretty much it, as you can see there isnt much too it.

thanks you guys, i will probably try doing all that this weekend,
or hell maybe tonight
but one mroe question...
is there a way to test the motor?
becaue im not sure if the tracks are jammed somehow
or if the motor just burned out

well the way to see if motor is burned out is if you don't hear it moving then it is prolly burnt out. but if you hear a clunking kinda sound its prolly the gears inside that are broken. so you would need a new motor, but if you look at the tracks you can prolly tell that it is off.

Yeah, what he said. Your right I was playing price of persia...what can I say Im kinda addicted to that game right now. The only other way to test the motor/wiring is with continunity checks. Get the wiring diagram from celiatech and it'll tell you where to poke that lead at. Other than that, you can check the overall integerty of the sunroof.

well i dont think its burned out because it does make noise
its like its trying to mobve, but then something stops it
when i push the button it does move slightly,
but not even enough to really see it move
but you can hear the sound clearly

sounds like the gears in the motor are messed up. Thats how my was doin it would going up and down and kinda seem like it was moving back. but do a visual inspection of the guide track and see if it is not off.

Since we're on the topic sunroof here, might as well post my quick question here. Grasby, hope you don't mind me posting on your thread. wink.gif

My question is, does anybody know how NOT to make the sunroof work? biggrin.gif

I just want to temporary disable the sunroof switches since the kids have the habit of playing with it everytime they ride the Celica. I've looked for a separate fuse for the sunroof but couldn't find any. I'm guessing that it's tapped on the DOORS fuse, after some trial and error in removing fuses one at a time. I know I could just unplug the motor but I don't want to go thru the process of removing and putting the roofliner back on everytime. Too much hassle.

Hoping for your advise (quick fix) on this one. Thanks! thumbsup.gif

BTW - Does anybody have a wiring diagram/schematics of a 6GC?

Um...... You could always just undo the relay to the buttons. Remove the bolt, take off the switches assembly, unplug it and snap that switch assembly piece back and bolt it back up. BOOM!

Thanks! I was thinking of just pulling out a fuse or something (or maybe installing a hidden "kill switch") since I'll be turning it OFF and On a couple of times a week. What you suggested maybe just the easiest thing to do then. I'll do it later, and just leave it "inoperative" for a while. Thanks. wink.gif

I suppose it would be possible to install a "kill switch", but its one more thing for your kinds to mess around with, so that wouldnt be all that effective (unless you hide it somewhere). The easiest thing to do would be to disable the system altogether. As far as getting a wiring diagram, I know they have one on celica tech, its a pain in the butt to register...I think thats the only reason why i even joined that site in the first place (not enough 6gen stuff)

simple fix,

remove the whole sunroof

just weld a couple braces, then on top of the braces sheet metal.

bondo a hood scoop and call it good

after paint of course! smile.gif

jk, i wanna do that tho.
