On topic: it was the damn emergency break. The spring that holds one of the shoes on ("hold down spring") broke - it looks like the tab that holds the mechanism in place broke, allowing the shoe to travel, which resulted in popping the hold down spring. So the grinding sound was the shoe rubbing inside the rotor. The spawning of satan sound was one of the wheel hub assembly bolts, oh, just cruising around freely inside that little area. It got caught - and left a nice deep groove inside the drum area. Good times!
So I, being an incessant packrat, took the hold-down spring assembly off the e-brake assembly off my drum brakes, which I never got rid of. Good thing. So it's back together, for now, but the spring is a little bit different and doesn't have that tab that broke off in the first place. So the shoe is still rubbing some, but I won't die driving to work this week. I will have it replaced by the end of the week (threads are damaged on the old one), because 3 bolts just doesn't instill confidence. Richee - do you have a rear disc assembly? I need that hold-down spring, and well, I need the shoe too if you've got it. Rear passenger side - the shoe on the left (towards the rear of the car). There's a little gold colored thingie that holds the shoe down, it's about the size of a dime. You rotate the top part to allow it to pass over the pin holding it in place, then everything comes apart easily. PM me? TRD - while I was out at the shop this weekend I FINALLY did my suspension! My new endlinks haven't come yet, but the old ones actually came off just fine. I started spraying everything down with PB Blaster about mid-week last week, so it wasn't really too much of a challenge. I used Batman's method using a vice grip and a socket wrench. Piece of cake. And since I have to go back out to the shop next weekend to fix the e-brake shoe assembly and put that 4th hub bolt in, I'll put the rear endlinks on. The springs are great though - I'm really happy with them. Thanks a million - you gave me a good deal and I really appreciate that. ![]() -------------------- ![]() |

I know!!! I totally need to take pix - I'll stop and get some on the way home tonight if it's still light out (should be). I really like the way it looks - with the beefier tires I put on in December, it all fits together really nicely.
It's actually SUNNY today!!! ![]() -------------------- ![]() |

this happends to all celicas!!! and we still don't know what that noise is in the back lol its really annoying.does anyone elses stop when you brake? I have the same rattling noise coming from the right rear. It sounds as though it is coming from inside the car. I have checked every suggestion on this thread and still have not found the source. The brake and suspension systems are all fine. Calipers and pads were replaced at a recent brake job, still there. E-brake components are fine. Struts and sway bar all check out to be solid. I previously posted under 'interior/audio/electrical ' (http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=77378) because I believe the rattle is coming from inside. If anyone has a similar proble and found the cause, I would appreciate your in put. Thanks in advance I have a '98 and '94 Celica GT. I bought the '94 2 years ago and it had a slight rattle which comes from the back area. It has gotten worse lately and even though it sounds like it's coming from inside, I can't find what is causing it. My '98 has started with the same sound just recently. I've had the suspension and under side of both cars checked by my mechanic. All is in order underneath with nothing loose. The suspension and exhaust systems on both cars are solid. Has anyone had a similar problem and found the cause/solution? Thanks in advance. My wife's '94 is starting to make the same noise. Her car is a GT coupe with only 64,000 miles on it. It is not as loud or noticeable as mine is. -------------------- ![]() |

You'd be surprised how many times those rattles are caused by either:
a) the jack in the trunk b) the screw thing holding in the spare wheel in the trunk I removed both of these and now the rear is near enough completely silent! |

Thanks for the suggestion, even with the jack, spare tire, tire cover, wrench, and tire hold down removed the rattle is still there. It's like a vibration rattle, it is there when I hit a bump or pot hole but it is also present on a less then smooth road without bumps or potholes present. All it takes is a slight vibration to get it rattling. -------------------- ![]() |

Hi! I've got EXACTLY the same noise you had Griffgirl! My first thought was the brakes, but when i liftet up the brake calipper, the noise was still there when rotating the wheel. Then i thought i might be the bearings, but there is no slack in the wheel.
My car has rear disk brakes, but can it be the same problem as yours? So it can be as easy as fixing the e-brake? The e-brake doesnt work at all btw, and my ABS-light is on. This post has been edited by skogs: Jul 25, 2011 - 3:31 AM |
