one day after i get a ticket for doing 51 in a 35 on a deserted road, i decide to take my celi for a weekly spin, and meet up with some friends. as we are leaving, an officer pulls behind me and flashes me. asks for the usual info and says that he's writing me up for obstruction of view. I ask where and he says the vinyl on my back window and the items hanging from my rear view.... he gives me the ticket and says remove it, and then sits there and waits for me to take the animal down, so im like do you want me to take the vinyl off too?

Im confused, i can understand my stuffed animal from my rear view, and MAYBE the sticker on my back window... but he never said anything about my tint? i better count my blessings then i guess.

The stuffed animal from the rear view is true, you can't have that. However, I'm pretty sure you can beat the rear decal part in court. Unless I'm mistaken, you need to have a minimum of two ways to see behind your vehicle. As long as you have a driver's and passenger's outside mirror, that's two, you do not even have to see out the rear window at all. Case in point a delivery van, or a pickup truck with a cap on it.

I dont know how it is where you live, but for petty stuff like that, a lot of the times, the cop wont show up for court. And if you show up, and he doesnt, the charges are dropped. But like I said, that is how it is here in IN, and I dont know if it is the same where you live.

I've heard of guys getting tagged for rear window obstruction due to their spoiler -- in one case, the stock spoiler on a WRX.

As Tweak noted, mirrors on both sides of the car make an acceptable substitute to a rear window. Check your local laws, and if you do decide to fight it, make sure to take a photo of the car showing the licence plate and both outside mirrors.

I checked on it, you guys were right, i talked to a lawyer that i went to college with, and he said the cop was harrassing me and "technically" couldnt force me to take it down, however it might be a good idea to take it off because it attracts alot of that sort of attention, regrettfully i took it off earlier because thats not the first time ive run into that cop and he drops by our hang out spot FREQUENTLY. he is also the same cop that went checking peoples tire tread depth and wouldnt let my friend leave because his tires were going bald (in addition to getting a ticket) i just dont want any more trouble from him. frown.gif

maybe i can get a skinnier one tweak? maybe 13inch long 3inch wide? ill buy.

The guy is obviously an asshole.

No respect for douches like that.

The problem is the system promotes people like him to thrive... its absurd.

I remember a few years back a guy who got done for his car being too loud, but his car was a standard STI Impreza with the PPP (Prodrive performance pack) which can be bought from the Subaru dealers. He contested it in court and even got Prodrive legal team to appear in court and justify his case that everything was above board. The ticket was quashed and never heard of again. Can't remember what compensation was paid out but it was a substancial amount.

ok damn, that's pretty big. If it was like a 4 inch bat, then I couldn't see a problem, but that's a pretty big thing to dangle from your rear view mirror kindasad.gif
