Hey i jsut had some work done on my car by toyota (boo me, me and dad didnt feel like tackling it)
It had a large oil leak and they said it was at the oil pump. They also checked the timing belt to make sure it hadnt got oil on it. Drove my car home and everything is fine. Later that night i am driving and it had a strange whirring noise. Its coming from the timing belt side of the engine, and it increases when my rpms do. The engine runs great like before and drives like it always did. Just with a noticeable noise. we loosed the serpentine belts some and that didnt help... I was thinking maybe the power steering belt, i have checked it yet. I just hope its nothing to do with the timing belt that was a big job (for me and dad at least) so what could it be? what could i check? there is a belt tensioner pulley on the celica, if this looses tension the belts will make the whine noise. this is easy to check.
On the alternator these should be a long bolt that adjust the tension of the alternator ( it sit right in front of the alternator). tighent this, and you will fill the tenstino on the belt increase, try this and see it if stops. good luck |

now i had a whining noise coming from that side of my engine bay, one day i popped the hood (while the engine was running) to listen more closely to where it was coming from. i thought it was coming from the powersteering also but turns out it was the alternator whining, so it might be the bearings in my alternator going bad. and you may have the same problem.
while the engine is runing reach over to the trottle cable and rev the engine a little, the whining from the alternator should increase. let me know if this helps... |

i had this same problem, and i thought it was the power steering.
so i raised the hood and tried to find what and where the noise was coming from. turns out it was the alternator bearings/brushes whining. i moved the throttle and the whining increased with the rpm's. (kinda like a supercharger lol) let me know if this helps... |

yeah i had that same problem.. it makes noise when you make a hard turn.. but it was my power steering.. the hose was leaking.. so i had that changed, now it dont do it no more.. if u wanna jus check it.. pour more power steerin fluid into it and if it stops that "whirrin" sound it could be jus a leak and not enough fluid gettin to the pump.

mine does something similar, but only during cold start up, and rpm makes it go away, i asume its not related at all but i could be wrong. sort of a whiney sound

if you had a leaking oil pump, and they did not replace the belt, i would take it back and demand they do so.
for free. the belt has to come off to do the pump, and for 30$ i wouldnt take the chance of even a drop of oil getting on the belt. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

after alot of head scratching I found that "whirring" noise was my alternator too. Its a bosch... perhaps I should put it on my ever growing "things to replace" list.
